Notice that our name has been changed to the Wysong Health Letter (we are referring to it as The Thinking Person’s Health Letter). Many readers commented that if the name was a clear indication of what was contained within the text of the newsletter, more people would be likely to notice it, pick up a copy, and begin reaping the potential benefits which new knowledge always promises.  To those of you who have written with this and other comments, we send a sincere thanks for your thoughtful suggestions.
One reader recently wrote, ”Getting people to think is not easy, but I believe you can do it with the Review...”   That’s our ultimate goal, not to simply tell you something, but to get you to really think about things.  Each of us has at least a little of the philosopher inside, and I believe we’re happiest and most challenged when using that “deep thinker” ability.
There is currently a strong resurgence of the Montessori methods of teaching, and other similar methods that propose that the child learns most and is happiest when allowed to explore, touch, question, and be a free thinker.  When the child is simply taught by rote methods, or spoon-fed knowledge to be memorized, little learning or healthy development takes place.  So it is on into adulthood, too, as this doesn’t simply stop being true at some random age.   The ability to turn over every stone, explore, question, inspect and create is very human.  It is also very necessary for fulfillment and health.
As society has become more sophisticated, it has also become more stratified.  There are levels of expertise in every division of labor, in every area of life.  It is extremely easy to begin to allow every type of expert - from an expert in plumbing to an expert in law or medicine or education - to dictate to us what needs to be done in a particular area of our lives.   It’s not only easy to let them dictate to us, conversely it’s downright difficult to refuse to let them dictate to us.  Try telling your child’s teacher that they are doing something wrong, or your local building inspector.  They may look at you as if they’re seeing an alien.  No one does this.  Most people just bow and obey.  And, there’s nothing wrong with respecting and deferring — if you’re reasonably sure they do have the right answer for you.  I just urge you to never stop analyzing, questioning, and filtering the information coming to you.   More on this in next month’s letter.
Incidentally, if you ever do write or call with a question, I want you to know first of all that we welcome it, and secondly that we’ll do all we can to help.  Though I may not be able to personally respond, be assured that I read every letter and hear every phone message.   We are here to help you and it in fact lifts us all here to be given the opportunity to do so.
Don’t be afraid to complain or criticize, either.  We take your comments as an opportunity to improve.
If you think we’re some big corporate conglomerate, sitting around in board rooms in three-piece suits ignoring customer mail and counting money, that’s not true.  But the only way for you to know is to give us a try when you have a need or suggestion.  I hope you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
Just a few minutes with no oxygen, and you are either dead or seriously brain damaged.
Indeed, oxygen is our most critical nutrient.  Although its absorption is not through the digestive tract, but rather through the tissues in the lung, it is still a nutrient.
Considering that oxygen is a part of water, as well as numerous other compounds throughout the body, the body is almost two-thirds oxygen.
Since air is only 20% oxygen, the body must expend considerable effort to concentrate oxygen from the environment.   This means that if the oxygen in the air we breathe becomes less concentrated, then the body must expend even more effort to try to extract the oxygen from it.
And yet we treat oxygen as if it is in limitless supply, much like we have treated all natural resources.  We erroneously think of our finite world as infinite, and capable of absorbing any abuse we heap on it.
Oxygen Deficiency
In some urban areas the percentage of oxygen can drop considerably, particularly on stagnant days.  Just about everything we do that burns a fuel directly or indirectly consumes oxygen.  The rate of replenishment of oxygen through photosynthesis, electrolysis of water, or by other means cannot keep pace with this consumption.  What we are doing to the air is like closing the door to our garage and turning on an automobile engine.  People purposely kill themselves in this way.  We are doing it in the larger “Earth garage” without even realizing what we are doing.  Once the oxygen level in the air gets much lower than 10%, human life simply cannot even be supported.
Combine these considerations with an increasing weakening in our physiology as a result of damage to lung tissues from pollutants, exhausted metabolic systems from eating processed, chemicalized, lifeless foods that are nutrient-impoverished, a sedentary life-style that never requires us to breathe deeply, and epidemic obesity that makes even lifting the rib cage to expand the lungs laborious, and you have the makings of serious and wide-spread oxygen deficiency.
We are indeed spoiling our own nest.  In the Earth’s preindustrial setting vast forests and blooming sea plankton pulled carbon dioxide from the air, fixed nitrogen from the soil and released oxygen.    Air mixtures in bubbles trapped by fossilized amber (the same amber that trapped the mosquitoes in the movie Jurassic Park) show primordial air to be much richer in oxygen, measuring 30% as opposed to today’s 20%.  This is a significant measurement.
Today we pollute, make waterways lifeless, and deforest with abandonment.  Modern industry consumes nearly 20 times the amount of oxygen from the air as compared to that extracted by all humans on Earth.   The end products are carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and a variety of pollutants that have wide-spread and interconnected effects, including the ability of the air to hold water vapor which in turn can affect the atmosphere’s ability to absorb or reflect various radiations.
We really don’t know what the end result will mean, because we simply cannot predict the complex and chaotic results of throwing wrenches into complex environmental machines.   You can be sure of one thing, the results will not benefit us.  They will simply change our environmental context and further alienate us from our own world.  The result invariably leads to disease — an inability to cope and adapt to a new estranged environment we are simply not genetically adapted to survive in.
Thus is repeated our continuing Wysong Health Letter synorgonic theme.
Oxygen as a disease fighter
Oxygen in the air permits us to burn the food fuels we consume.  Oxygen burns these fuels much like it is responsible for the burning in an open wood fire.  Oxygen is also important to protect us from microbial invaders.  High oxygen tissue levels are simply not conducive to the growth of pathogenic disease-causing organisms.  Additionally, free radical forms of oxygen released by our  immune cells actually are the lethal bullets that destroy disease-causing microbes which can only survive in the absence of oxygen.  Some disease tissues, such as cancer, are also incapable of sustaining themselves  under high oxygen levels.      Thus, low body oxygen tension can set the stage for the development and continuance of cancer as a result of these tissues losing their sense of context and reverting to the uncontrolled multiplication of their embryonic undifferentiated ancestries.
Cancer cells derive their energy from sugar, not oxygen like normal cells.  It is suggested that any cells deprived of 60% or more of their oxygen supply will indeed turn cancerous.   Conversely, if oxygen tension is increased, these cells will revert to their normal metabolism and reproductive state.  It is interesting in light of this that the trend of society is more sugar and less oxygen.  Is it little wonder that cancer is an epidemic?  (For a complete discussion of how cancer can be linked to cells losing their sense of context see Wysong Health Letter Vol. 4 No. 9)
A natural concern is that if oxygen produces its antimicrobial effect by producing free radicals, why are we not damaged by these free radicals as well?  Free radicals, although the basis for many disease processes, are a normal part of life.  All energy reactions produce free radicals as a natural part of their mechanism.  Without free radicals it would not be possible for us to extract energy from our foods.  Fortunately our body has a variety of free radical quenchers — sort of like fire fighters.  These free radical fighters include such nutrients as vitamin E, vitamin C, certain  enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, catylase and glutathione peroxidase.  Thus if these systems, our fire fighters, are in order we are protected from free radical damage.  On the other hand if our diets are depleted, we are not protected and disease can result.   Disease-causing microbes do not have such free-radical fighting systems, thus when they are exposed to oxygen free radicals they are simply destroyed.
How to increase your oxygen
Fortunately there are some things we can do.  We need not simply sit back and be victims of continuing and accelerating oxygen depletion in our world.
    1.          For one thing, support environmental movements and activities that preserve what nature we have left.  Plant trees.   Fill your house with plants, and if living in a smog-choking environment, consider moving closer to areas that are forested or near the sea.
    2.          Make exercise a part of your life every day.  Aerobic and strength training exercises will condition your body to breathe more deeply and thus more efficiently extract oxygen from the air.
    3.          Try to remove unnecessary stress from your life.  The stress I am referring to is primarily the stress of feeling like you are a victim and out of control of whatever situation is bothering you.  Do what is necessary to change your circumstances so you feel in control.  This will bring more happiness and peace.  When you are under stress your breathing is automatically more shallow.  When you are relaxed and content, your breathing is deeper and more complete.  When you laugh you even increase your ability to extract oxygen from the air and strengthen the muscles responsible for breathing.
    4.          Go barefoot as much as you can.   “What?!,” you say?  Yes, oxygen is axe “negative ion generators” conductive, electrically active molecule and reportedly can be uptaken by the body 30% better if your body is grounded to the earth.  Nonconducting materials like carpeting, asphalt and rubber-soled shoes all interfere with this conductivity and decrease our ability to absorb oxygen.
    5.          Negative ion generators used for cleaning the air and decreasing the positive polluting ions in the air are believed to increase the efficiency of oxygen absorption by the body.  (For sources of these generators see resource A - page 8)
    6.          Hydrogen peroxide is a natural, oxygen-rich compound found in nature.  It is available commercially as a 35% food grade hydrogen peroxide liquid.  There is much evidence to support the use of this compound diluted in bath water, as a splash on, as a drink, and as an IV for the restoration of health that has been compromised as a result of lowered oxygen tension.
One to three drops of a 35% H2O solution in 5 ounces of water to be drunk three times a day is a starting point.  It can also be mixed with orange or apple juice, but not with many other drinks because the components of  the drink may cause the peroxide to break down and release the oxygen before you can consume it.  Hydrogen peroxide is also an excellent addition to bath water and jacuzzis resulting in the absorption of oxygen directly into the skin.  For a thorough discussion of the many uses of hydrogen peroxide see resource B - page 8.
Hydrogen peroxide and ozone have been used in Europe for over 50 years for the treatment of a variety of diseases.   Our medical regulatory body, the FDA, does not permit such claims for these products in this country in spite of the significant evidence for their benefits.   One writer stated that hydrogen peroxide is the “embodiment of a drug company owner’s worst nightmare;  people who use enough of it simply stop buying   virtually every other pharmaceutical product.”  For more information on the use of oxygen as therapy for a wide range of conditions ranging from gum disease to arthritis to cancer to skin ailments... practically anything, see resource C.

In the previous issue (Wysong Health Letter Vol. 7 No. 9) I discussed the prevailing erroneous understanding that peptic ulcers are caused by too much stomach acid.   The chances are, unless you are a child, you have a deficiency of stomach acid.   At age 50 most people have about 15% of the hydrochloric acid they did at age 25.   Then on top of this a large percentage of us are taking antacids and acid blockers.   Those who embark on this war on acid are doomed if their ultimate objective is to increase health.
Stomach acid assists in the absorption of protein, vitamins such as B12 and folic acid, and a broad range of minerals including iron and calcium, magnesium and zinc.  Stomach acid is also the first line of defense against disease-causing microorganisms.
A study recently reported following the rate of gastric cancer in 17 populations from 13 countries showed a positive relationship between this cancer and the presence of the bacterium Helicobacter pylori.  This evidence shows that H. pylori infection will increase the risk of stomach cancer by a factor of 6, and that 40 to 60% of all gastric cancers may be attributed to infection with this agent.  In the absence of appropriate levels of stomach acid, this organism can flourish, thus increasing the risk of this cancer.
The altered physiology and resultant symptoms of low stomach acid include gas, bloating and constipation.  There may be middle of the night substernal (behind the breast bone) pain.  These symptoms may persist in spite of changing the diet and in spite of nutritional supplements.   Arthritic pain, anemia, skin problems and pruritis ani (itchiness of the anus) are also common with low stomach acid.  Halitosis is a symptom that cannot be eliminated regardless of oral hygiene and often acid backup is felt when fruit juice is consumed. There is increased incidence of allergy because larger undigested proteins are absorbed.   These are recognized by the body as foreign invaders, thus setting the stage for allergic reaction due to the continuing presence of these large proteins.  Stomach emptying is slowed and the excretion of bile and pancreatic enzymes is also slowed.   The entire digestive tract, as well as the liver, become sluggish and increasingly unable to eliminate toxins.
These symptoms in part arise due to the interrelationship of the acid in the stomach with other digestive secretions.   Also, the overgrowth of microorganisms that escape the low acid stomach results in putrefaction and the resultant bloating and gas common with this condition.   Interference with the digestion of vitamins and minerals can cause or exacerbate arthritic, osteoporotic, anemic and malnutritional conditions.
What to do
    1)          First of all, seek a healthy life in all respects.  Lack of exercise, poor nutrition and stress not being resolved all can take their toll on stomach physiology and repress the secretion of hydrochloric acid.
    2)          Simplify meals.  Eat only one item in a meal that is cooked, such as breads, pastas, meats, combined with a salad or raw veggies.
    3)          Eat smaller meals more frequently to permit the small amount of acid that is present to digest the foods.
    4)          Don’t eat if you are not hungry.   Actually feel hunger pains before you eat.  Then try to delay the meal so you are almost salivating by the time the meal is ready.  This psychological anticipation of foods greatly stimulates acid secretion and digestive enzyme secretion.
    5)          Chew meals thoroughly and slowly.   By thoroughly mixing the food with saliva and breaking it down to the smallest possible parts in the mouth, you increase the digestive capabilities.  A good rule of thumb is drink your foods and chew your liquids.
    6)          Use digestive enzyme supplements to assist in food breakdown and probiotic supplements to compete against disease organisms.   (Resource D - page 8)
    7)          Don’t eat if you are upset.   Emotional distress turns off the stomach acid spigot.
    8)          Eat higher protein foods, such as meats, first.  Acids are required for the proper digestion of protein and if they are eaten after filling the stomach with starches, for example, the acid effect is diluted.   Best yet, avoid mixing proteins and starches and either have protein (meat, tofu, etc.) and salad or veggies, or alternatively starches (potatoes, pasta, etc.) and salad or veggies.
The best supplement of hydrochloric acid is believed to be hydrochloric acid with betaine and pepsin.   (Resource E)  Take these only if all of the other efforts above do not resolve your digestive, low acid problem.  Usually these tablets are taken one in the morning, one at lunch and two with dinner, if that is the heaviest meal.  As digestive function begins to normalize, slowly decrease the acid supplement over a period of several weeks, which will help your system adjust to the increasing need for it to produce its own acid.
Often normalization can occur within four months and the use of stomach acid tablets can be withdrawn.  This of course assumes you are doing all of the other things we have described above to try to achieve synorgonic healthy balance.

A very peaceful and reportedly pain-free method of childbirth is detailed in a new book by Chan Thomas, entitled “Natural Childbirth Self-Taught.” (Resource F)  Dr. Thomas has 43 years of experience in research and teaching natural childbirth methods.  His underlying premise which immediately caught my attention and made great sense:  Pain is the body’s way of telling us something is wrong.  What could be wrong about childbirth when it’s an absolutely natural occurrence?  Why should childbirth — a perfectly natural function — be accompanied by oftentimes great pain?
Dr. Thomas’ answer is simple.  There’s nothing wrong with childbirth, but there is something wrong with the modern birthing methods.  Pain in labor serves a purpose as it does anywhere else in the body.  If pain occurs, the mother is doing something wrong.  Correct the method and the pain will disappear.
He argues that pain of labor is due to the tearing of the muscles in the cervix as they fight against the muscles in the upper uterus with each contraction.  The cervix, if the woman is not completely relaxed, will tense up and not expand.  The muscles of the fundus (top part) of the uterus are more powerful, and will continue to contract out of sync with the muscles of the cervix, thus causing birthing pain.
How to avoid this?  The relaxation of the cervical muscles depends on being completely relaxed — thoroughly relaxed throughout the body.  Every muscle in the body, even the pinky finger, must be completely relaxed.  This means the mouth is hanging half open, the eyes are half open, no talking or moving takes place.  Imagine being in a just-before-sleep state with even the often-tense facial muscles — creased forehead, tightened mouth — completely loose and relaxed.  This is the type of state necessary for delivery without pain.
The father (or birthing coach — for our purposes here I will simply say “father”) sits close, touching one forearm of the mother.  The only movement she makes is a slightest nudge with her arm to let the father know when a contraction is beginning.       Other than that, she’s limp.  It is a facial clue which becomes the control point for the father of the child, who is there not just as a support to the mother but to play a really significant role.  The clue is the corners of the mouth.  According to Dr. Thomas, the two corners of the mouth are the last to relax when we go to sleep, and the very first to tense when we awaken.  The husband monitors those muscles to watch for the beginnings of tension, and then his job kicks in. His job is to watch the corners of the mouth, where the first and slightest tension will show.  If any is detected, he prompts with “Relax, relax,” gentle commands, and smoothes her face and brow if necessary.
With this method, reports indicate that following delivery it is the mother who is exhilarated and pepped up, while the father feels as if he’s been through a war.  Both parents report an extremely beautiful experience, but using these methods the birth actually takes more of a toll on the father.
Various opinions have been set forth about the proper position for birthing.  Recently many “experts” have felt that squatting is an age-old and appropriate position for delivery.  Dr. Thomas feels that kneeling - Eskimo women and others dig holes and kneel over them - is actually the perfect position.  The alignment of shoulders to pelvis is key.  Of course one can’t kneel over a hole in most hospitals.  A very workable alternative is lying on the side, with the father of the baby seated right next to the mother.
Giving birth is an arduous job.   It is astonishing, but Dr. Thomas guarantees painless childbirth and says his simple method obsoletes all other natural birthing methods, including Lamaze.
In addition to the actual birthing methods for all stages of delivery, this small book discusses methods to arrest edema, avoiding an episiotomy, nursing mother’s breast care and more.  For anyone expecting a baby, this book may certainly be worth a look.

A recent headline in the Tufts University Diet & Nutrition Letter read, “Breast-Feeding Prevents Ear Infections.”  To me this seemed like saying eating prevents starvation.  Of course it does.  It is what we are designed to do.  It is a natural life function.
A better headline would have been: “Bottle-feeding Causes Ear Infections.”   How far our disorientation has come.  We find it more noteworthy to exclaim that breast-feeding, the natural, normal, most healthful form of feeding infants, can prevent a disease than to remark on the converse; that is that by feeding a so-called “100% complete” synthetic, fractionated, synthesized food to infants that ear infections are increased.
Ear infections are no small problem with young children.  Over 60% of infants will suffer ear infections and 1 in 5 will have recurring infections throughout early childhood, sometimes even resulting in some measure of permanent hearing loss.
Feeding infants convenient, synthetic milk superfoods in a bottle under the mistaken belief that they are “100% complete” is analogous to feeding pets super bow wow cutlets in a bag or can that are supposedly “100% complete.”  Neither human nor veterinary nutritionists know what 100% complete nutrition is, because no nutritionist knows 100% about nutrition.   This basic fallacy in so-called “100% complete” foods is simply ignored as nutritionists continue to study, fabricate and synthesize various new improved concoctions that are but a dim reflection of the real foods meant to be eaten by real creatures.
Moms, feed your children the best superfood ever invented right from your breast as you swaddle and warm and tenderly bond with your child as nature dictates would be best.  If you are unconvinced that this is the best way to feed, then refer to past issues of the Health Letter for other evidences of how not only your baby’s health, but your health can be dramatically improved by breast-feeding.    (Wysong Health Letter Vol. 1 No. 4; 2,  9; 3, 6; 4, 6; 6, 9)

Your best protection from fraud is to increasingly become self-reliant.  The more we depend on experts to solve our problems, the more we open ourselves to abuse.
As discussed in the “Empowerment” tape, experts who are for hire have their own agenda, their own set of priorities.   They are concerned about themselves first off, second they are concerned about their status within their professional organization, then comes you as a profit center, and then somewhere way down the list your actual interests might be considered.
Nevertheless, it is very difficult in our modern complex society to not utilize services and products.  If you have been harmed in some way by another’s product or service, first off, take the matter up with the offending party and try to resolve it amicably.
If this fails, don’t immediately run to an attorney — which may only expand your vulnerability — but contact an appropriate agency from the following list to see if they can assist you.   These actions are by and large free and permit you to actively be engaged in the matter, which will lessen your feelings of being a victim and feeling hopeless, which can take a significant toll on your health.

These avenues of redress are not to suggest that we should get into the rabble-rousing business.  Life does not always deal us the winning hand.  If possible, in most cases, it is best to simply chalk bad situations up to experience and move on.  If you have been significantly harmed, however, and you are simply not able to function without attempting to obtain an equitable resolution, then the above sources may be of assistance to you.   Chronic bitterness, resentment and feeling like a victim are very dangerous to your health and you must take reasonable actions to gain control.  Sometimes the only way this can be accomplished is by actively pursuing redress.
To repeat, however, continue to strive for self-sufficiency and independency.  If difficulties occur do your best to see the larger picture, to rise above the issue, learn from it, and move on.  If redress becomes necessary for one reason or another take as much control of the situation as possible and do not simply attempt to turn the affair over to others.  By so doing you will gain a feeling of control and be able to more quickly move on with your life.

The Lancet recently contained a photo of a Maasai warrior with the attending comments that although the Maasai eat a diet of milk and meat with twice the fat and cholesterol content of Western diets, they are largely free of heart disease.  They remark “one small fact can ruin the grandest hypothesis.”   Indeed, there are many facts that run counter to the notion that “cholesterol causes heart disease.”  We have outlined these repeatedly in the Health Letter.  The difference between the Maasai diet and the high fat diet of modern civilization is that the Maasai are eating their high fat meat products in their raw, unaltered state.  The Lancet article did not note this important difference, and thus miss the crucial point — the fact that raw, natural diets have health-giving, disease-preventing benefits over the processed, fractionated, synthetic, modern counterparts.

2,832 adults ranging in age from 45 to 77 were in a study conducted by the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.  The feeling of hopelessness was measured in these individuals.  The result was that deaths from heart disease were four times more prevalent among participants who reported severe hopelessness than among those who reported no hopelessness.  Review the “Empowerment” tape and make a commitment to take control over your life and not be a victim or remain in a position where you feel hopeless.

Lights in the bedroom may increase the body’s production of estrogen.  Since PMS, menstrual difficulties and breast cancer are linked to high estrogen levels or erratic cycling of estrogen and progesterone, it might be wise to sleep in the dark.

Before getting too excited about buying foods using the new synthetic fat substitutes in the hope of losing weight, consider that recent research has shown that such fat substitutes, used at 10% of energy from dietary fat, did not reduce overall consumption of calories.  Our bodies and appetites are evidently not tricked and we simply eat more to make up the difference.

Evidence we have discussed before in the Health Letter suggests that increased dietary iron may increase the risk of heart disease.  Iron is believed to be capable of causing free radicals and oxidizing cholesterol.  However, iron is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies in the world.  Before excluding iron from your diet and supplements, it may be wise to have a simple blood test performed.  The test measures ferritin.  If your ferritin level is over 200, additional iron supplementation would not be necessary.   If it is under 200, supplementation may be in order.
