    There are now about 13 million cases of AIDS world wide.  About 1 million Americans have the HIV virus.  This is a rapidly spreading epidemic with an anticipated 70,000 new cases being diagnosed in the U.S. alone in 1994.  Compare this with the previous 8 years since AIDS was first discovered in which 100,000 cases developed.
    American women have underestimated their risk and as a result of lack of caution the infection is increasing 4 times faster in women than in men.  The disease is also rapidly escalating in American teenagers.  It is estimated that some 80,000 children under the age of 18 will lose their mothers to AIDS by the year 2000.
    The cost to society in terms of medical care will reach some $15 billion by 1995.
    Debate continues in the scientific literature as to what has really caused the disease.  Some researchers believe it is simply the result of a disease agent(s).  Others believe it is a syndrome in which certain microbes, including the HIV virus, are opportunists.       Others argue that it is a manufactured disease that has been inoculated into the population via contaminated vaccines, either inadvertently or on purpose.  (For some interesting references exploring how AIDS is likely an entirely man-made debacle see Vol. 1 No. 10)
    Although there is great hope for an "AIDS vaccine," it is unlikely that one will be forthcoming.  If and when it does it will probably be introduced just as the disease is going through its natural epidemiological regression.  Pharmaceutical companies will reap billions by taking credit for doing what nature has already done. (Vol. 8 No. 1 for an example of how this occurred with measles.)
    AIDS is linked with a debilitated immune system, promiscuity, drug use, and blood transfusions.  No one has to take drugs and arguably no one ever has to receive a transfusion (Vol. 4 No. 7; 6, 6).  
    Sex is another matter.   Don't hold your breath for everyone to stop "doing it."   Nevertheless, scientists have resigned themselves to recommending that the only way to prevent the disease is to abstain or maintain a mutually monogamous relationship.   But with divorce rates exceeding 50%, and teens and adults continually assaulted with titillating sexual media messages, these steps of denial will be slow in coming.  
    In the meantime, be aware that the disease is out there and that it is ubiquitous.  Follow the counsel in the Health Letter to build your resistance so that if you are exposed you put the odds in your favor for resisting the disease or perhaps even recovering from it.  Although AIDS is arguably 100% fatal, this is only a guess since how do we truly know how many individuals have been exposed and have simply overcome it, leaving no detectable signs of the event? 
    Interestingly, some practitioners outside the mainstream claim success in treating and curing this "incurable" disease. (Resource A)  Finally, for those of you who would like to try to make the most of a mutually monogamous HIV-free marriage, our lead article will give some interesting insight on doing the seemingly impossible—getting along.

    It is natural for us to seek out companions who have similar interests.  After all, if you want to spend your days cooking meals and sewing, why seek a companion who wants to spend their time playing golf and fishing?  Yet sharp contrasts in interests exist in most marriages.
    These differences seem unimportant in the early stages of a male-female relationship.  Bonding occurs because of romantic love and sexual desire.  Some anthropologists argue that the initial infatuation between men and women only lasts long enough to raise a child through his or her first four years.  Unless another child is born, it would be "normal" for relationships to end.  The anthropological argument is that humans today are still, biologically, nomadic hunters and gatherers with men inclined to move from mate to mate to spread their genetics as far and wide as possible, and women inclined to seek a stable environment within which to raise children.  The   manifestation stereotyped of that today is the male's easy arousal to a female's beauty and the woman's more measured assessment of man as an economically stable opportunity for the future of a family.  This seems a little cold, I know, but I suspect we are far more victims of this biology than we would like to admit.
In a world in which perpetuation of the species is of utmost importance, such biological predispositions are critical.  On the other hand, this is not so appropriate today, for ours is a world in which stable, peaceful relationships and intelligent population control are necessary for the very survival of the planet and the species.
    A common scenario: couple meets, falls in love.  They fulfill each other's needs for love, affection, security and worth.  They marry.  The husband becomes absorbed in his work (hunting/protecting).  The wife feels neglected and unfulfilled.  She has a child and becomes absorbed in its care (mothering/nurturing).  The child fulfills and satisfies instinctual needs for loving and affection for the mother, but now the husband feels neglected and unfulfilled.
    If the two don't recognize their differences and work to continue to satisfy one another's needs, resentment, bitterness, animosity, and even hostility and separation can result.  The dream of a lifelong loving, close family can become a nightmare of divorce courts, child custody separations, dating turmoil, emotional trauma to the children, support payments and destroyed assets... not to mention the toll on health.
    Understanding how to make a man-woman relationship work requires first of all understanding that the sexual/reproductive, romantic love bond that joins them in the beginning—an almost mindless state which is oblivious to differences—will pass.  Couples are then left with the work of developing a mutually satisfying relationship that can bring each peace, happiness, contentment and a feeling of purpose and worth.  Her early morning wake-up time and his late hours may not matter to a couple who are all googly eyed in love with each other in the beginning of a relationship. Down the road, after their brains return from vacation in the gonads, these differences do matter and can cause division, anger, hostility and animosity.  To make matters worse, often to resolve the differences the goal of each mate becomes changing the other to their liking.
    The differences between the sexes go far beyond the pinks and blues of babies.  In my children I noticed differences at the very earliest age when they were able to make any choices.  Given 2 stacks of toys, girls will usually show a preference for the dolls and playing house, the typical mothering instincts, and boys will be infatuated with trucks, dinosaurs and sports, the typical hunting and protecting instincts.  Without any guidance whatsoever, given equal access to various toys, I have watched with amazement as my children make these choices clearly and irrevocably.
    Here are some other differences that will underscore the distinction between the sexes.  These are differences that are virtually impossible to erase.  They must be acknowledged and incorporated into life if the two opposites are to live together in peace and happiness.
    1.  Men average 5’9".   Women average 5’4".
    2.  Men carry 1-1/2 times as much muscle and bone and 1/2 as much fat as women.
    3.  Men add an inch to their true height while women subtract more than two pounds from their true weight.
    4.  Women live an average of 2,665 more days than men.
    5.  For men, money and sex are equally important, but for women money has higher priority.
    6.  Sex drive is highest in the morning for men but varies with a monthly cycle for women.
    7.  More women than men take vitamins.
    8.  More than 8% of men are alcoholics compared to only 3.5% of women.
    9.  Women suffer some symptom of discomfort, such as headache or fatigue, more than 43% of the time, while men experience it only 28% of the time.
    10.  Women can endure twice as much chronic pain as men.
    11.  Women remember details more effectively than men.
    12.  Men have a weaker sense of smell than women, but are more sensitive to light.
    13.  Boys in high school are twice as likely to be daily users of marijuana than girls.
    14.  Men take criticism from children harder than women.
    15.  Men are more prone to use criticisms and ultimatums for employees.  Women would more likely use a counseling approach.
    16.  Men are more likely than women to favor expenditures for nuclear weapons.
    17.  Men talk more about news and work and women talk more about food and health.
    18.  Men drive twice as many miles as women annually.
    19.  Women develop cellulite, men don’t due to the differences in a fibrous structure meshing between the skin, fat and muscle layers.
    20.  85% of women want to lose weight, 45% of men want to gain weight.
    21.  Men attract women with boasts of earning potential and showing off cars and stereos, whereas women attract men by their looks or displaying sympathy for a guy’s troubles.
    22.  Intimacy for men creates confidence and resiliency that lets them conquer the world, whereas intimacy for women leads to a greater satisfaction in their roles as wife and mother.
    23.  Men’s preferred home activity is sex, whereas women’s preferred activity is time with the family.
    24.  Men exercise more strenuously than women.
    25.  Women know more about nutrition, and doctor more than men.
    26.  Men’s most popular sport is fishing.  Women’s most popular sport is swimming.
    27.  Men perspire more heavily on their chests and women more heavily on their arms.
    28.  Men sleep lighter as age advances, whereas women are not affected as much by differences in sleep patterns with age.
    29.  Most men put their pants on left leg first.  Most women start with the right leg.
    30.  Men are more likely than women to choose foods to increase athletic performance, but women are more likely to eat foods that enhance health.
    31.  Men have double the risk of heart disease that women have.
    32.  School bullies are far more likely to be boys than girls.
    33.  One of three women diet, compared with one out of five men.
    34.  The CEOs of 497 of the Fortune 500 companies are male.
    35.  71% of women spank children and only 30% of men do.

    47.  The percentage of men who snore is 53% compared to 23% for women.

    49.  Women find the face to be an important attractive feature twice as often as do men.
    50.  The chance that your best friend fantasizes about your wife is 1:2.5 compared to your best friend’s wife fantasizing about you being 1:6.6.
    51.  The percentage of men who have had an extramarital affair is 37% compared to 29% for women.
    52.  The success rate for men who use the pickup line "Hi" in a bar is 71%, whereas with the same pickup line for a woman, success is 100%.
    53.  The average number of intercourse positions that a man knows is 14, compared to 9 for women.
    54.  The percentage of men who prefer sex with the lights on is 45% compared to 17% for women.
    55.  The likelihood for a woman to see going to a mall as entertainment is 10 times that as for a man.
    56.  The likelihood for a man to spend a weekend afternoon watching a sports event on television is 10 times that as for a woman.
    Many primitive societies recognize these differences and are structured accordingly.   There are several tribes and societies, such as the Yanomama, which keep men together in separate housing, discussing their hunting forays, and the women house together discussing their family activities.  The sexes come together as necessary to procreate.
    Our society is not structured to accommodate male-female differences.  But this does not mean that all marriages must end in divorce, with resultant social chaos and abandoned children.  The key is to recognize the differences. By recognizing that each partner is captive to their biology, frustrating efforts to change one another will not preoccupy the relationship.
    A woman’s family orientation (procreation and nurturing) complements a man’s occupational (hunting) endeavors.  Thus a division of duties is normal and harmonious.  Differences can actually be used for benefit.  For example, a woman’s inclination to wake earlier in the morning and to retire earlier at night permits each a period of alone time during the course of a day.  A mate does not need to mirror your every thought and movement.  But this is also not an excuse to be oblivious to a mate's needs, selfishly isolating to serve your own biology.  Synergistic balance can occur between two totally different creatures, as can be seen throughout the synergistic, commensal and various symbiotic relationships in nature.
    Not recognizing differences and allowing them as a part of the basic nature of your mate can create tensions and stress that can make life miserable, and impact severely upon health through the daily continuous stress created.  Divorce is not necessarily the answer, rather, understanding and communication can create balance, peace and happiness.  Harmony may simply be a matter of sitting down and rationally discussing needs, expectations, differences and areas where adjustment is possible, as discussed in Vol. 5 No. 6; 4, 2.
    Often married couples move from their romantic love bond to the busyness of family life.  These activities keep them bound together and seemingly happy as each proceeds in the interest of the family with little consideration for self.  But when the children leave and retirement approaches, the things that distracted each from the other's differences now must be faced squarely.  The golden years that could be the highlight of life and of the relationship can turn into a bitter, resentful entanglement with each partner now simply barely tolerating the other, but remaining because they see no other option. 
    So where lies hope?  It begins with knowledge, not fantasies.  The infatuation and fervor of romantic love does not last.  If it did, productive society would crumble as couples spent days dreaming of one another and nights breeding the planet into oblivion.  This does not mean a romantic beginning cannot blossom into a mature loving friendship and partnership.  
    The differences in the sexes can result in a mutually satisfying symbiosis.  But before this occurs, understanding and tolerances of innate differences between the sexes is essential.  While each can allow for those differences in the other, each also will need to compromise the biological imperatives to a degree to help fulfill the needs of the other.  Without totally sacrificing self, make your partner think, "I like you because you make me feel good about myself."  Relationships, particularly close ones, aren't easy. But the mind and body health benefits of a pleasant and mutually satisfying respectful one are worth the effort.

Medical Cost Effectiveness
    The cost to add a year to life by using dietary modification and supplements is less than $3,000.  On the other hand, to add one year to one person's life by using modern medical measures and mammograms (if such can even happen—see related article this issue), costs $82,000, plus using cholesterol-lowering drugs ranges between $50,000 and $100,000, and considering yearly Pap smears is $930,000.6
    Our invasive, manipulative, high-tech, medical approach to disease is an illusion that is sucking the economic blood out of society.
    Meanwhile, our government debates how to solve the "health care crisis," which will likely mean not a revision in the way health care is delivered, but rather simply a revision in the way it is paid for.  This approach will mean productive, working people will increasingly pick up an ever-greater portion of the tab for useless and dangerous interventionistic procedures.
    Other than crisis and emergency care, for which modern technology is a wonderful boon, health needs to be addressed on a true preventive basis, which includes dietary and lifestyle modification and environmental restoration to natural synorgonic balances.  By placing the responsibility for health where it belongs—on the individual—and educating in the principles of self-care, well over 90% of the $800+ billion spent in this country alone could be eliminated and the health of our society would be vastly improved.
    We need to stop running to the doctor with every sniffle and ache, and realize that we are having a problem because of what we are doing, not because of what the doctor is not doing.  The solution is to examine our food, our lifestyle and environment and make the changes to get well.
    We don't need free medical care or more extensive third-party coverage, we need less medical care (a cause of much illness by iatrogenesis [doctor-caused]) and personal responsibility.
If you're sick, look inward to your own life.   You are likely the cause.  You fix it, and seek assistance primarily from those who help you help yourself.

    An ongoing theme in the Health Letter is that choices you make now can have dramatic impact on your life far into the future. 
    Here is another example:   2,657 infants in Rochester, New York were given x-ray treatments for suspected thymus enlargement.  These, along with about 5,000 controls (infants who did not receive such x-ray treatments) were followed for 37 years to evaluate the incidence of thyroid cancer.  (Since the thymus is very close to the thyroid, when the thymus was irradiated the thyroid also received radiation.)  There were 37 thyroid cancers in the irradiated group and 5 in the control group.  The higher the dose of radiation, the higher the risk of cancer.  Although the risk of developing cancer declines somewhat over time for those individuals who were irradiated, there was still an increased risk  some 45 years after the treatment.
    You can be sure that, when it was popular, irradiation of the thymus in infants was being touted as the latest wonderful technological achievement of medicine, perfectly safe and wonderfully effective.   Since no adverse effects were measured in the months or years following irradiation, and the thymus decreased in size, the assumption was made that these claims were true.      Unfortunately for these "infants," now in their fourth decade of life following this technology, thyroid cancer belies all the confident claims.
    Remember the synorgonic filter we emphasize repeatedly in the Health Letter and in the Empowerment tape.  If a therapy or an environmental circumstance puts us out of our natural context (and certainly the irradiation of the neck in an infant is an unnatural event, an unnatural context for neck tissues), then it is to be viewed with high suspicion for its possible adverse effects.
    In spite of the super technology and elitist bedside manner that is supposed to make us all feel like we are as well cared for as an astronaut on the way to the moon, arguably the greatest danger to health today is the doctor who practices modern high-tech medicine on a submissive, compliant, ignorant patient.

Gulf War Disease
    Some two years after the Gulf War, many veterans are experiencing a serious syndrome.  It includes symptoms such as staggering, slurred speech, pain in the joints, lack of energy and hair loss.   Thirteen out of every 15 babies born to these veterans have had blood disorders or birth defects.  Even blood banks are reportedly refusing to take blood from Gulf War veterans.
    Although there is much denial by government, it is becoming increasingly clear that the Gulf War was not the surgically precise, clean victory we were led to believe.  Individuals who are experiencing this condition may have difficulty obtaining effective treatment.  Dr. Edward Hymen, a New Orleans physician, has, however, treated this syndrome successfully using special antibiotic regimens.  He would certainly be the one to contact for those who are having difficulty getting a response.  Media reports indicated that no biological agents were used against U.S. soldiers...  but then why would an antibiotic regimen work for these soldiers?

Why our water is in danger

Government for everyone
    Here is a way to make everybody friendly toward government:  Make state employee payrolls grow twice as fast as the population nationwide (which is currently happening) and do like the city of New York, which now employs 353,000 people.      That is 1 out of every 21 residents.  The idea is to create new services for unmet needs, and insure proper voting by putting a greater percentage of the population on the government payroll.

    The pineal gland, located at the base of the brain, secretes a hormone called melatonin.  Light signals the release of the hormone and darkness shuts its production down.  As evening approaches and melatonin levels in our body drop, tiredness ensues and sleep results.
    This hormone has been studied extensively and is one of the best known links between our external world, in particular light, and the functioning and rhythms of our body cycles.
    Melatonin is available in oral form without prescription.  I doubt this will last, since there are many health claims being made about the use of Melatonin and surely the FDA will intercede.  I would urge caution in the use of any hormone substance that is naturally produced by the body.  The level of hormones and our ability to produce them is determined by a feedback mechanism based upon the levels of hormones that are in the body.  For example, if androgenic steroid hormones are taken by athletes, these male hormones signal to the testicles that there are plenty of male hormones circulating in the body and thus the testicles will shut down their production of testosterone.  If the hormones are continually taken, the testicles can actually atrophy (shrink) and lose their ability to produce the hormone.  I worry about a similar affect by taking supplemental melatonin.  But perhaps for the measures mentioned below short-term therapy might be tried if other methods seem ineffective.  Some examples of the use of melatonin are for jet lag, depression, seasonal affective disorder (SAD), schizophrenia, insomnia, breast cancer and Alzheimer's disease.  All of these conditions are hormone mediated in one way or another, and reports in various medical journals have demonstrated effectiveness of melatonin in their treatment.

Silicone and Autoimmune Disease
    Silicone breast implants are suspected of causing immune disorders in women.  Now evidence has shown a possible link between silicone implants and systemic lupus erythematosus, a debilitating autoimmune disease.  One child, a 15-year-old boy, had a silicone testicular prosthesis placed in the scrotum for cosmetic reasons due to a birth defect known as cryptorochidism, which results in only one testicle descending into the scrotum.  In another case a young girl had a silicone scleral sponge implanted in her eye after having retinal detachment.   In both cases lupus erythematosus developed.  Although these are not controlled studies, they are a warning.
    I can remember when I used to work at Dow Corning here in Midland.  We learned that silicone had great potential in the medical field because of its "proven" inertness in tissue.  Isn’t it amazing that what we know for sure in our science today is not so tomorrow?

Breast Screening By Hand
    If a woman follows the American Cancer Society's guidelines she would get her first mammogram at 40, and then one every year or two until age 50 and then one per year after that.  If a woman survives into old age, she may have received 50 or more doses of ionizing radiation to the sensitive breast tissues.  Evidence reported in a recent Journal of the National Cancer Institute demonstrated that there was no benefit from mammography screening of women in their 40's. A Swedish study has, in fact, demonstrated an increased risk for breast disease for women following radiation therapy.
    Remember, the time to cure breast cancer is before it ever begins.  Examining for existing breast cancer is not prevention.  Following the many lifestyle and dietary measures outlined monthly in the Health Letter can do much to prevent this and many diseases before they ever begin. 
    When women think of breast screening they always think of mammography.  As we have discussed previously in the Health Letter, all radiation including that used for diagnostic tests such as mammography, is both toxic and additive.  That means that the radiation you receive from mammography adds to the radiation you received at the dentist, which adds to the radiation you received from a chest x-ray, which adds to the background environmental radiation you may be receiving.  This radiation adds together and accumulates through the years to create its potentially toxic effects.
    Though mammography may be able to detect small tumors that might not be able to be felt by hand, there is no evidence that the detection of such small tumors decreases mortality for women or that such non-palpable tumors would ever cause any symptoms at all or threaten life.
    It is now concluded by some medical researchers that simple physical examination of the breast is as effective as mammography in terms of both human and economic costs.  As reported in a recent British medical journal, "The question we should be asking is not how to refine mammographic screening, but whether we need it at all."

Calcium and high blood pressure
    In a study of almost 7,000 men and women over a 15 year period it was found that those individuals who consumed at least 1 gram of calcium per day had a significantly lower risk of high blood pressure.  On the other hand, if the person drinks alcohol every day this calcium effect is of no benefit.

Organic food proven superior
    In some studies testing organic food against commercial foods, it is argued that there is little or no difference.   Often such testing will measure things like protein or mineral levels.  Such crude analyses are like attempting to measure bacteria with a yard stick.  Nutrition is a matter of subtleties and incredibly complicated interconnections.  Nevertheless, a new study has shown that certain nutrient concentrations in fresh, organic foods were twice those of commercial foods.  For those of you who would like a scientific reference to help prove the value of organic foods, see resource D.

Canker sores
    To heal and stop the pain of canker sores try dabbing powdered alum directly on the sore.  Reportedly the cankers will be gone within two days and seldom is more than one application required.

Coffee, exercise, and high blood pressure
    For individuals who have hypertension (high blood pressure), drinking coffee and then doing aerobic exercise can boost diastolic and systolic pressure, and may increase damage to the cardiovascular system.  In effect, it accelerates the damage that is already resulting from high blood pressure.

Kidney Stones
    The herb hydrangea is reportedly effective in dissolving some types of kidney stones according to herbologists.   (Resource E)      Some kidney stones sufferers experience a relief of pain by drinking fresh squeezed lemon juice.  One individual in great pain from stones reported a complete cure by taking a citrus powder containing D-limonene (Resource F), along with cranberry juice concentrate capsules.  With each meal one capsule of the citrus powder and two capsules of the cranberry juice were taken.   Within two days the pain was gone, and six weeks after beginning the stones had disappeared from the kidneys.

Vitamin E dosage
    A study of some 87,000 female American registered nurses demonstrated that doses of less than 100 IU of vitamin E had little or no benefit for coronary disease risk, whereas doses above 250 IUs per day did not give better protection than doses between 100 and 250 IUs per day.  Therefore, according to these studies, the best dose of vitamin E is between 100 and 250 IUs per day to achieve the benefits of decreasing cardiovascular disease risk.

Flavonoids and heart disease
    Flavonoids are antioxidants naturally present in vegetables, fruits and certain beverages such as wine and tea.   In a study of 805 men aged 65-84 it was found that flavonoids regularly consumed may indeed reduce the risk of death from coronary heart disease in elderly men.  Yet another testimony to our constant reminders to increase fresh whole fruits and vegetables in the diet.

Ultrasound dangers during pregnancy
    A study of 2,834 women demonstrated that frequent exposure to ultrasound may influence fetal growth.   Researchers recommended that ultrasound not be used routinely for the entertainment of the parents but be restricted to those women for whom there is a significant cause to perform ultrasound.

Brand your kids
    Kidnapping of children is a very real danger in the United States.  Over one million children are reported missing each year and 50,000 remain unaccounted for. Keep a regular updated, complete description of children including height, weight, hair and eye color, birth dates and identifying marks.  Also take color photographs on a regular basis.  You might even consider having your dentist prepare a dental chart, and have your children finger printed (as was recently offered at our local grade schools).  It seems incredible to even have to consider such precautions, but until our world becomes more secure, danger lies primarily in not being cautious enough.

Low-fat mayonnaise

Making peanut butter better
    Peanuts are a protein-rich legume like, beans and soy.  They are quite nutritious, containing a spectrum of vitamins and minerals and are energy dense with fatty acids.
    Although Americans eat about 100 tablespoons of peanut butter per person each year, in the quest for asthetics and mouth-feel, manufacturers have unfortunately replaced the goodness of peanuts with dangerous additives and manufactured toxins.  For example, refined salt, stripped of all of its natural trace minerals, is in most commercial products.  In order to keep the oil from separating in the jar, manufacturers have hydrogenated the oils, creating dangerous trans-fatty acids (Vol. 7 No. 3) and converted unsaturated fatty acids to saturated fatty acids.  Peanuts come from factory-farmed crops which have been laced with pesticides and herbicides and either a synthetic preservative or no preservative is used to protect the essential unsaturated fatty acids that are so important to health.   (Resource H)
    I enjoy peanut butter and used to feel good about feeding it to my children until I learned what corporate peanut butter was all about.  So I decided to fix it.  We first found a source of organic peanuts and organic soy beans.  The peanuts are cooked and ground and the soy beans are extruded.  By combining the two, we are able to greatly enhance the essential fatty acid and lecithin content and also enhance the protein levels.  Also, in preparation, compounds within the legumes that can be antinutritional are inactivated.   (Vol. 3 No. 1; 3, 9; 7, 6)  Next, we added a 74-trace-mineral salt and a natural antioxidant comprised of vitamin E, tocopherols, herbal oleo resins and other natural antioxidants to protect the essential fatty acids.
    The result is a unique, delicious peanut butter that is packed with good, wholesome nutrition.  Though the oil will separate in the bottle, it does not take that much effort to mix the oil back in, or alternatively you can simply store the bottle inverted so that the oil remains dispersed.
