High dose vitamin D supplements for the elderly
Giving high dose vitamin D supplements to elderly housebound people should be seriously considered as a means of preventing falls and fractures. This is based on different, independent studies looking for the optimal vitamin D dose. In a randomized controlled trial, elderly women given 800 IU vitamin D daily with calcium had a 47% reduction in falls and fractures compared with controls receiving calcium alone over 12 months. In another study, with a three- month follow-up, the incidence of falls was almost halved and musculoskeletal function improved among elderly people who had 800 IU vitamin D with calcium compared with calcium alone. In contrast, two randomized controlled trials have found that 400 IU vitamin D daily, the current RDA, to be ineffective in reducing the frequency of fractures, and two descriptive studies have noted deficiency despite supplementation at a dose of 400 IU daily. Since housebound elderly people often do not get adequate exposure to sunlight and probably get less exercise, supplementation at these levels seems to be the best option.

(Dr. W Straight Talk: My feeling is that the 400 IU recommendation for vitamin D is fine if another zero is added. 4000 IU per day is more like it as you will see in the new monograph on O-Mega D just completed. Everyone living north of northern Florida is likely to be vitamin D deficient and the impact on health is far beyond bone strength. Do yourself a favor and read the monograph.)

Apple compounds could reduce breast cancer risk
Consumption of fruits and vegetables has been shown to be effective in the prevention of chronic diseases. These benefits are often attributed to the high antioxidant content of some plant foods. Now, the apple a day theory may help ward off breast cancer. Study results show that tumor incidence was reduced by 17, 39 and 44% in vivo, fed the equivalent of one, three or six apples a day, respectively, over 24 weeks. Phytochemicals, including phenolics and flavonoids, are thought to be the compounds contributing to the health benefits of apples. Most of these are found in the peels. As confirmed by this study, peels were also effective in inhibiting the growth of HepG2 human liver cancer cells. Maximum phenolic content was found in freeze- dried peels as opposed to air or oven dried.

(Dr. W Straight Talk: Apples are a natural food for humans because they can be eaten and digested in raw form. Of course apples prevent and reverse disease. No studies are needed to know that! It also can be expected that the outer coating of fruits and vegetables would be the most concentrated in antioxidant chemicals since this outer coat protects produce from the destructive effects of the sun. The peels are fine if you are buying organic but they should probably not be trusted otherwise.)

Cranberries can prevent tooth decay
Cranberries can treat a plethora of health-related conditions. Along with their well-known usefulness in treating urinary-tract infections, cranberries also protect against heart disease, stroke, and cancer. Researchers have proven that a beverage containing 25% cranberry juice inhibited bacteria from binding and accumulating on an artificial tooth by 67-85%.
This finding led researchers to suggest that cranberry dental floss and toothpaste might ultimately provide consumers with a healthier smile. Furthermore, the naturally high levels of antioxidants may provide protection against cardiovascular disease as well as help reduce the severity of a stroke. A related study demonstrated how cranberry juice decreased total blood cholesterol, while another observed an increase in HDL. Finally, researchers claim that due to their antioxidant profile, cranberries may help inhibit growth of cancer cells found in the prostate, colon, breasts, lungs, cervix and other locales.

How Oral Contraceptives Hurt Your Baby
Many women are unaware of the dangers involved with taking oral contraceptives. Research shows that the synthetic hormones present in oral contraceptives create deformities in the prostate gland of the fetus, which have been linked to prostate cancer and bladder disease later in life. As many as 3% of women become pregnant while taking oral contraceptives, leaving their baby susceptible to health conditions early in life. Nearly 20 million women are considered to be taking the pill while pregnant.

ALA-rich walnuts reduce inflammation
For the first time, scientists in the US demonstrated that a diet high in walnuts decreases C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker of inflammation strongly associated with heart disease. A diet rich in alpha- linolenic acid (ALA) found in walnuts, walnut oil and flaxseed oil not only lowers bad cholesterol, but could also impact this marker of inflammation for heart health. "The research shows that walnuts, one of the oldest food ingredients known to mankind, with their unique nutrient profile, can play a role in reducing cardiovascular risk factors..."

Walnuts are one of the ingredients in the Wysong shake I have shown you how to prepare. It is best to soak raw walnuts (and pecans) in water for about 12 hours to permit the potentially digestive-upsetting tannins to leach out of the skins. After you do this you can then freeze them and eat at will. Their fat content permits them to remain perfectly chewable even in the frozen state.)

Can You Fight Cancer With Ketchup?
Organic ketchup may help fight cancer. Organic ketchups contain up to 3 times more lycopene, a cancer-fighting chemical, than non-organic brands. A study evaluating the lycopene levels and antioxidant activities of 13 commercial ketchup sources: 6 popular ones, 3 organic ones, 2 store brands and 2 fast-food chains found organic brands excelled; one brand contained as much as 183 micrograms of lycopene per gram of ketchup, non-organic brands averaged 100 micrograms per gram, one fast-food brand contained a mere 60 micrograms per gram.

Deadly Effects of Hormone-Suppression on Men With Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer is the second-most common and deadly cancer among American men, affecting 230,000 men a year. A common prostate cancer treatment, hormone suppressing drugs, increases the risk of broken bones and serious bone fractures which can cause slow-healing infections, various complications and even death. Hormone-suppressing drugs can decrease the production of hormones like testosterone, which promotes the growth of prostate cancer cells. Additional side effects have also been associated with these drugs such as hot flashes, loss of mental sharpness and loss of muscle mass and strength.

Menstrual Pain Eased With Vitamin E
Vitamin E has been linked to menstrual pain relief and the reduction in the amount of menstrual blood loss. In a study of 250 teenaged girls (aged 15-17) with menstrual cramps or primary dysmenorrhea, it was found that those who took 200 milligrams of vitamin E (which started two days before their periods and continued through the first three days of bleeding) endured far less cramping than girls who took a placebo. After a four-month span, the girls who took vitamin E had cramps for less than two hours, on average, during their periods, compared to 17 hours for those who did not take the vitamin. Vitamin E targets enzymes inhibiting the formation of prostaglandins responsible for menstrual cramping.

The Dramatic Effect of Fish Oil on Learning & Development
Children may be suffering from behavioral and learning disorders due to nutritional deficiencies such as omega-3 fatty acids. Children given fish oil supplements showed up to a 40% improvement in reading and spelling. A 3-month study of almost 120 British children (ages 5-12), who were considered underachievers and believed to have dyspraxia (an impairment affecting body coordination and movement which results in messages from the brain being improperly transmitted) revealed that children who took fish oil supplements made about three times the amount of progress in their reading skills than those who took the placebo. Similar boosts in progress were seen in the placebo group when they switched (crossed over) to active supplements.
