Current Research and Thoughts You Can Use for Health and Healing
...And Which Verify The Wysong Optimal Health ProgramT

HOLIDAY POUNDS STICK AROUND: Very few people who gain a holiday bulge manage to lose it in the new year. On Thanksgiving and Christmas the typical American eats about 25% more calories than on a normal day. Since this gain is not reversed during the spring or summer months, the net weight gain during the holidays contributes to the increase in body weight that frequently occurs during adulthood. (N Engl J Med, 2000; 342:861-7.)
(Dr. W. Straight Talk: Try to eat portion style, not endless buffet style. Fill the plate with a reasonable amount of food and let that be the end of it. If you have not been chopping wood all day or running a marathon then that should be plenty. Eat what you deserve then do the most important exercise of all - push away from the table. Go do something else like take a walk, play some ping pong with the family or wrestle with the kids. The desire to eat will pass if you can do this and you can then feel real superior for overcoming the desire to gorge as you look back at the table (trough) where everyone else is still diving in so they can feel miserable and guilty later.)

SMOKING LOWERS IQ: Smokers performed significantly worse in five different cognitive tests than did both former smokers and those who had never smoked. When social and health factors such as education, occupation and alcohol consumption were taken into account, smoking still appeared to contribute to a drop in cognitive function. A link between impaired lung function and cognitive aging has long been suspected, though the mechanism is unclear. One possibility is that smoking subjects the vital organs, including the brain, to oxidative stress. (Addict Behav, 2005; 30(1):77-88.)
(Dr. W. Straight Talk: Life is so short and filled with challenges enough. Why voluntarily do something with no upside, which can additionally only compound life's difficulties? Measuring consequences and making smart choices is why we have brains.)

CHILDHOOD OBESITY LEADS TO ENLARGED HEART: Weight gain that begins in childhood may produce an enlarged heart by early adulthood - in some as young as 20 years old. The study confirmed that by early adulthood, body mass index and high systolic blood pressure are independent predictors of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). LVH refers to the over-development of the left side of the heart, which can lead to a heart attack or heart failure. These findings not only confirm that obesity reflects the development of early cardiac enlargement, but they also signify the importance of getting children to eat healthy diets and exercise. (Circulation, 2004; 110:3488-92.)
(Dr. W. Straight Talk: It is not love to give children everything they want. Love is making the right choices so your children will not be saddled with crippling degenerative and socially ostracizing adult diseases. The same sense that makes you keep the kids out of traffic and away from matches and sticking hairpins in electrical sockets should be used when deciding what we put into their bellies and minds. Just because they are not immediately harmed by being pudgy and eating a steady diet of pop and candy during the forgiving resiliency of youth does not make choices correct. Be a thinking parent.)

HERBS IMPROVE INSOMNIA: Those who are regularly kept awake at night, plagued by thoughts of work deadlines, relationship problems or other stressful life events might find relief in the herbs kava and valerian. It was found that these herbs reduced stress levels and insomnia with only minor side effects compared to over-the-counter and prescription medications. 1 (Phytother Res, 2001; 15(6):549-51.)
(Dr. W. Straight Talk: Exercise and getting out-of-doors in the fresh air and sun are also excellent sleep aids. Do something so your body needs the recovery of sleep.)

ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS RUIN BODY'S ABILITY TO COUNT CALORIES: Eating and drinking artificially sweetened items might hinder the body's metabolic ability to estimate calorie intake, therefore making you more likely to overindulge and experience weight gain - the exact opposite of the your intent and the hype of such products. (Int J Obesity, 2004; 28(7):933-5.)
(Dr. W. Straight Talk: No surprise here. A lot of wasted "research" and probable lab animal suffering to tell us the obvious: Bodies that come from nature need food that comes from nature, not the chemist's lab. When chemists succeed in synthesizing creatures, then they can feed them synthetic food.)

CHLORINE ALTERNATIVE MAKES TAP WATER MORE DEADLY: The supposed safe chlorine alternative that is being added to U.S. tap water has been found to contain toxic byproducts more toxic than chlorine itself.
These questionable byproducts have been found in drinking water that has been treated with chloramines, a chlorine alternative. Thirty years of research strongly suggest that chlorine byproducts are associated with certain types of cancer, birth defects, and developmental defects. 2 (Environ Sci Technol, 2004; 38(18):4713-22.)
(Dr. W. Straight Talk: Buy the best filter you can and drink only the water that comes through it. Lots of pure water is critical to your health (see Water Quality Products), but you should make sure it is not toxic.)

MAJOR SOURCE OF MERCURY RISK: One study researched fish consumption and mercury levels in the blood of 1,709 women between the ages of 16 and 49 years and 705 children between the ages of one and five years. Approximately eight percent of the women had dangerous levels. It was also found that adult women had mercury levels three times higher than children.
Pregnant women and those who plan to become pregnant should limit their intake of fish as it is the leading source of mercury and can cause fetal toxicity. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends these women avoid shark, swordfish, king mackerel, and tile fish known to contain high levels of an organic form of mercury called methylmercury. According to researchers, fish such as haddock, tilapia, salmon, cod, pollock and sole, as well as most shellfish tend to be low in methylmercury and are safer to eat. 3,4 (J Am Med Assoc, 2003; 289(13):1667-74.)
(Dr. W. Straight Talk: Eating in variety is the best safeguard against toxicity. Remember, just about anything can be toxic in high enough dose. So give your body a break and permit its natural detoxifying mechanisms to clear toxins out before they accumulate to a level causing disease.)

FOLIC ACID & VEGETABLES BUILD STRONGER BONES: High levels of the amino acid homocysteine appear to raise the risk of fractures in people who have osteoporosis. It has been suggested that taking lots of B vitamins will help keep homocysteine levels in the healthy range. Foods that are naturally enriched with vitamin B and calcium include dairy products, broccoli and other green leafy vegetables, carrots, avocados, cantaloupes, apricots, almonds, and peanuts. Good supplements are wise as well. Subjects who have high homocysteine levels have double the chance of experiencing fractures when compared to those with lower levels. 5,6 (N Engl J Med, 2004; 350:2033-41.)
(Dr. W. Straight Talk: Two other critical ways to maintain bone mass and strength is by weight bearing exercise and letting sun - in moderation - hit as much of your skin as you can legally expose as often as possible. Bottom line is, eat as you were designed to eat, exercise so you deserve to eat, and get off your duff and outside in the fresh air and sun.)

MORE INSANE USES FOR STATIN DRUGS: Several red flags have been raised over the use of statin drugs, which are currently used to reduce LDL cholesterol levels. In 2001 Bayer's statin, BaycolT, was pulled from the market after 31 deaths from rhabdomyolysis. This condition results in kidney failure. It was also recommended that AstraZenica's CrestorT be taken off the market after cases of rhabdomyolysis appeared. 3 (USA Today, June 28, 2004.)
(Dr. W. Straight Talk: Cholesterol is not the enemy. If you don't consume cholesterol your body will produce it. Oxidized cholesterol from processed food, on the other hand, is a problem. The solution is not to continue life as usual and take statins, but to learn how to live and eat in accord with the way you are designed.)

MULTIVITAMIN SLOWS HIV ONSET: A multivitamin reduces the advancement of HIV in pregnant women in Tanzania. Study participants were given a multivitamin including vitamins B, C and E, a placebo, vitamin A alone, or a multivitamin including vitamin A. Of the four options, it was discovered that the women taking the multivitamin with vitamins B, C, and E were 30% less likely to advance to further infectious stages of the disease or die than those women who received the placebo. This could mean an affordable treatment option is available for the underdeveloped countries. 5,7 (N Engl J Med, 2004; 351:23-32.)
(Dr. W. Straight Talk: There's a study that will not be applauded by the drug and vaccine industries!)

SUNSHINE PREVENTS LYMPHOMA: Sun exposure has a protective effect against the development of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (a blood cancer). The risk of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma decreased with increasing hours of sun exposure by as much as 35%.
One effect of sunlight is to stimulate the body's production of vitamin D, which is believed to protect against cancer.
(Interestingly, the researchers who conducted this study were originally investigating the possibility that high sun exposure is associated with an increased risk of this cancer.) 5 (Int J Cancer, 2004; 112(5):865-71.)
(Dr. W. Straight Talk: The sun (in moderation) is not our enemy; it is at the very core of all life. Ever wonder how naked humans through eons of time and all the animals outside survive all the skin cancer the sun supposedly causes?)
