FISH OIL TO PREVENT ALLERGIES:  Taking fish oil supplements when pregnant protects offspring from developing allergies, suggests new research.  The study found that at one year of age, the children of mothers who took fish oil supplements while pregnant are three times less likely to have, as one example, egg allergies.  Overall, they are 10 times less likely to have severe allergic diseases.  Mothers who supplement their diet with fatty acids rich in docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) during pregnancy and lactation may also increase the IQ of their children.

GENETICALLY-MODIFIED DNA IN THE DIGESTIVE TRACT:   Scientists have discovered that DNA from dietary genetically modified (GM) plants can survive to the small intestine, and that gene transfer to the gut microflora may occur.  This evidence supports growing global opposition to GM foods.  To prohibit such foods from entering your diet, choose organic products when possible.  (Nat Biotechnol, 2004; 22(2):204-9.)

THE HARD MATTRESS MYTHHard beds do not help low-back pain, a randomized trial with chronic low-back pain sufferers shows.  Study participants who slept on a medium-firm mattress for three months were twice as likely to report improvements in low back pain while lying in bed and when getting out of bed compared to those sleeping on a firm mattress.  This group also reported less daytime disability due to pain, and they were less likely to need pain-killing drug treatment.

POPEYE WAS RIGHTScientists have shown that spinach is rich in the antioxidants beta-carotene and lutein, containing far more of the two combined than most other fruits or vegetables.  Beta-carotene converts to vitamin A in the body and is needed for healthy sight, skin and hair.   Lutein is a pigment found in the retina and may help guard against eye diseases such as age-related macular degeneration. QUIT SMOKING – DON'T JUST "CUT BACK"The amount of carcinogens inhaled by smokers remains high even when they cut down on the numbers of cigarettes they smoke, a new study shows.  The same holds true even if they supplement their fix with nicotine patches; even when allowed to use as many patches as they wanted, the smokers still inhaled a disproportionate amount of carcinogens.  Researchers speculate that this is likely because the smokers are subconsciously feeding their addiction by inhaling more deeply on the few cigarettes they do smoke.  The study emphasizes that the best way to cut cancer risks is to quit completely.  (J Natl Cancer Inst, 2004; 96(2):107-15.)

VITAMINS C & E TO PREVENT ALZHEIMER'STaking high doses of the vitamin E (1000 IU) and vitamin C (500-1000 mg) can help prevent the onset of Alzheimer's among the elderly, finds a new study.  Use of these antioxidant vitamins in combination reduces Alzheimer's prevalence by approximately 78% and incidence by about 64%.  Researchers say such supplements may be an ideal prevention strategy for the aging population as they are relatively non-toxic and are thought to have wide-ranging health benefits. (Arch Neurol, 2004; 61(1):82-88.)

VITAMIN D FOR PAINA new study shows a link between musculoskeletal pain and vitamin D deficiency.   Although many believe vitamin D deficiency is only prevalent in older or housebound people, the worst cases are found in younger people – especially women of childbearing age.  In addition to non-specific musculoskeletal pain, the risks of vitamin D deficiency include osteoporosis, hypertension, diabetes, cancer, and auto-immune diseases such as multiple sclerosis.
