DEADLY BABY FORMULAS:  Although baby formulas are supposed to only be used for those mothers unable to nurse for one reason or another, they are far more prevalent in use than that (to the glee of manufacturers).   The risk of infant death during formula feeding is about double that of breast-fed babies.  The relative risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) is five times greater; heart, circulatory and respiratory failure is dramatically increased; necrotizing colitis is a 6-10 times greater risk; diarrhea causes up to 15 times the death rate; respiratory illness results in 17 times the hospitalization rate; and cancer as much as three times the rate.
    Nutritionists are not able to duplicate the health-giving miracles of breast milk.  There are aspects of this whole, living food they don't even begin to understand.  (You pet owners who are feeding so-called “100% complete” pet foods at every meal, take heed!)  So unless it is impossible to breast-feed (inconvenience does not equal impossible), give your child the best start he or she can possibly have with the champion of all human foods, breast milk.  If you must substitute, find a surrogate breast, or raw cow or goat milk.  (Natural Family Online, 2003.)

ANTIOXIDANTS IN CHOCOLATECornell researchers recently found that cocoa contains nearly twice the antioxidants of red wine, and up to three times those found in green tea.  The reason for this is the high content of  flavonoids in cocoa, indicating the presence of antioxidants that can prevent cancer, heart disease and other diseases.  The results suggest that cocoa is more beneficial to health than teas and red wine in terms of its higher antioxidant capacity.

CALCIUM TO PREVENT CHILDHOOD OBESITY: Children should be strongly encouraged to regularly include calcium-rich foods and drinks in their diets, report researchers, after a new study confirms the negative association between the mineral and body fat.  Dietary variety was positively related to calcium intake, and intakes of carbonated beverages and other sweetened beverages were negatively related.  The researchers suggest the findings may be relevant for obesity prevention during childhood.

ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS REDUCE HOSTILITYNew research has shown that high dietary intake of DHA and consumption of fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids is related to lower likelihood of high hostility in young adulthood.   Hostility has been shown to predict both the development and manifestation of coronary disease.

GRAPES PREVENT STROKE DAMAGEResearch has discovered that resveratrol – a compound in red wine or grapes – can absorb the free radicals, minimizing the damage they do to the brain as a result of a stroke.  A stroke can occur when there is blockage of blood flow to the brain, preventing the delivery of oxygen and nutrients. Neurons in the affected areas of the brain begin to release excitatory amino acid neurotransmitters, which encourage calcium to move into the neurons resulting in free radicals that can cause significant damage.   This nutrient has also been found to be useful in promoting longevity.  Wine is the primary dietary source of resveratrol, but it is also found in mulberries, peanuts, grapes and grape skins.

TOMATOES PREVENT HEART DISEASELycopene, which has previously been found to help prevent some cancers, has now been found to play a role in preventing cardiovascular disease.  More than 80% of the lycopene intake in the American diet is from the consumption of tomato products such as ketchup, tomato juice and tomato sauces, but it is also found in watermelon, pink grapefruit, apricots and papayas.  (Am J Clin Nutr, 2004; 79(1):47-53.)

VITAMIN B12 FOR DEPRESSIONNew research shows that those who suffer from depression respond better to their treatment if they have high levels of vitamin B12 in their blood.  Researchers hypothesize that vitamin B12 helps manufacture compounds called monoamines in the central nervous system, a shortage of which is believed to be linked to depression.  The study found that the patients who responded fully to the treatment had higher concentrations of vitamin B12 in their blood at both the beginning and end of treatment. Each year, depression affects approximately 10% of American adults.   (BMC Psychiatry, 2003; 3:17.)

VITAMIN D PREVENTS COLON CANCERResearch has shown that high vitamin D levels are associated with a very significant decrease in colon cancer. Those with a vitamin D level above 20 ng/ml have one-third the risk of colon cancer compared to those below that level.  Risk of colon cancer was reduced by 75% in those with levels of 27-32 ng/ml, and in those who had vitamin D levels above 33 ng/ml, the risk of colon cancer was reduced by 80%.
