Knee Pain – Surgery or Exercise?
The treatment of chronic patellofemoral syndrome (PFPS), which is chronic pain in the front part of the knee, has been shown (The ORTON Research Institute in Helsinki, Finland) to respond just as well to a home-based exercise program as with arthroscopic surgery. The study showed that participants who received the surgery and the exercise program and the participants that did just the exercises alone had similar reductions in pain and increased knee mobility at nine months and at two years. The only difference, of course, was the surgery participants got to brag about their surgery, spend a lot of money needlessly, and subject themselves to the risks of the surgery. Science Daily 1

Fluoride is Detrimental
Fluoride, touted for years as beneficial for teeth, has now been proven to be a health threat. Elevated fluoride levels lead to reduced I.Q. in children. If the children are low in iodine, the results are even more dramatic. Even at levels as low as 1 part per million, toxic effects on the brain include reduction in lipid content, impaired antoxidant defense systems, damage to the hippocampus and purkinje cells, increased uptake of aluminum, formation of beta-amyloid plaques (the classic brain abnormality in Alzheimer’s disease), and accumulation of fluoride in the pineal gland. Learning disabilities and behavioral issues result in children as well. The dose makes the poison, and obviously not all who drink fluoridated water and use fluoride toothpaste succumb, but caution is in order with chronic exposure to any known toxin. Meningitis Vaccine Causes Major Concerns
Many colleges require students to receive the meningococcal vaccine before admission. Side effects from the vaccine include headaches, fatigue, and joint aches and pains. A rare complication of the vaccine is the development of Guillain Barre Syndrome which is similar to multiple sclerosis. The vaccine itself does not protect against one-third of the strains of the disease and does not guarantee immunity against any strains. Less than 1 in 100,000 people contract the disease, half of them infants, and most fully recover. The disease is not easily transmitted and many have already been exposed to it providing natural immunity. It takes a huge amount of faith and trust to permit anyone to inject anything into your body.

Dental Disease And Mental Decline
Research conducted by Dr. Robert Stewart of Kings College London has found that older people who have lost all their teeth are more than three times as likely to develop memory problems or dementia as people who still retain most of their teeth. The exact causes are not yet determined, but we can assume the chronic dental disease leading to the loss of the teeth seeded the body with infection and inflammation.  Additionally, when the gums and teeth are painful, and then after they are pulled, people are inclined to soft processed foods, which usually means lots of starches, sugars, and little chewing of the raw foods so necessary for health. Dandruff and Scalp Fungus
Researchers have determined that fungus feeding on unhealthy skin oil, and its enzymatic action on scalp skin cells, causes the skin shedding known as dandruff.  The best treatment is to correct the balance of Omega-3, -6 and -9 fatty acids. Most Americans consume excess pro-inflammatory hydrolyzed Omega 6 fatty acids derived from grain starches and processed foods.
To correct the balance, the diet needs to be shifted to more natural and unprocessed foods, and sources of the Omega 3 and Omega 9 fatty acids need to be increased. Fish, flaxseed oil, krill oil, and walnut oil will increase the Omega 3 dietary concentration. Extra virgin olive oil increases the Omega-9. (See Dr. Wysong’s book on Lipid Nutrition) Using organic herbal shampoos and personal care products not containing sodium laureth and or lauryl sulfate, which are known irritants, can also help.
The shift in dietary fatty acids is also important in reversing and preventing:
·         Heart disease
·         Diabetes
·         Cancers
·         Arthritis
·         Eczema
·         “Cracked Heels and Alligator Skin”
·         Dry skin, scalp and hair

Soft Drinks Contain Chemicals Linked to Cancer
Out of 100 soft drinks that were analyzed by the government, five of them contained benzene, a cancer causing chemical which is linked to leukemia, at levels that surpass the standard set by the Food and Drug Administration. The federal benzene limit in drinking water is 5 parts per billion (ppb) and the levels in these soft drinks were as high as 79 ppb.
Benzene is able to form in beverages containing vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and preservatives such as sodium or potassium benzoate. Exposure to heat or light may activate the formation.
The five drinks that rated high in levels of benzene were:
·        Safeway Select Diet Orange
·        Crush Pineapple
·        AquaCal Strawberry Flavored Water Beverage
·        Crystal Light Sunrise Classic Orange
·        Giant Light Cranberry Juice Cocktail.

Note that all of these are being marketed for their health benefits. Labels touting “natural,” “organic,” “diet,” and the like give no assurance of safety. The wise course is to follow the Optimal Health Program and revert to more natural non-processed foods, and even then, variety is the best safeguard against toxins which can lurk everywhere. Breast Cancer Risk Reduced By Sunbathing
A study by Stanford University found that women who had high exposure to sunlight (long-term) had half the risk of developing breast cancer compared to those with low sunlight exposure. The reasoning behind this may be that women with high sunlight exposure have increased levels of vitamin D. Up to 90% of the vitamin D in the body comes from sunlight exposure. The sun is not our enemy, it is the source of life on our planet. We avoid it to our peril, as repeatedly pointed out in this newsletter.  American Journal of Epidemiology 5

Fight Cancer With Sprouts
Eating 113 grams of vegetable sprouts on a daily basis has been found to help prevent negative DNA alterations in human blood cells. Sprouts are the stage in a plant’s growth when nutrient and enzyme levels are at their highest and act as protectants of oxidative stress to cells brought on by carcinogens and other free radicals (commonly associated with risk of cancer). Sprouts from broccoli, radishes, alfalfa and clover have been found to be particularly beneficial. Medical News Today 6

Treat Kidney Stones Naturally by Doing Nothing
Approximately one million Americans develop potentially painful kidney stones each year.  Kidney stones form from excreted or metabolic chemicals present in the urine. They can become wedged in various places along the urinary tract and produce painful blockages. 90% of kidney stones will pass on their own in a few days or weeks. Many of the invasive procedures performed to unblock the urinary tract increase the risk of infections as well as urinary tract and kidney damage. Increasing the consumption of pure water and simply letting them pass is usually the best approach. USA Today 7-12

“Junk Sleep” Damaging Teenagers’ Health
The Sleep Council conducted a poll of 1000 teenagers from ages 12 to 16 that revealed that 30% got only four to seven hours of sleep. Another 25% said that they fell asleep while watching TV, listening to music or using some electronic entertainment device.
About 40% said that they felt tired each day, and 20 of the boys polled admitted their quality of sleep was affected by leaving on the TV or computer. Only 11% said that they were bothered by the quantity or quality of their sleep.
The Sleep Council warns that low quantity, and low quality “junk sleep” could rival the unhealthy junk food craze as a major lifestyle issue for parents and teenage children. Scientific American
