Dark Chocolate Found To Have Healthy Benefits
A recent study found that consumption of dark chocolate (100 grams daily) improves insulin resistance and sensitivity as well as decreases systolic blood pressure. This observation is linked to the high flavanol content of cocoa and consequently dark chocolate. Flavanols have been suggested to increase nitric oxide bioavailability, which in turn helps regulate the body’s insulin sensitivity.

Fish Oils Cool Anger Levels
Supplements of omega-3 fatty acids may mitigate aggressive behavior in substance abusers. A small, double-blind study found that those who took 3g of fish oil per day had lower levels of anger, potentially reducing the tendency towards aggressive behavior.
(Dr. W. Straight Talk: First thing to do for psychological problems is the obvious. Stop addictive behaviors, eat right, get out in the sun, and exercise. The brain is a nutrient and oxygen glutton and will not function properly without the right fuel. Omega-3 fatty acids are almost universally deficient in the modern diet. Take appropriate W-3 supplements and eat more natural foods—not the processed starch and sugar-based fare.)
Canadian Study Shows Short-Term Vioxx Toxicity
Recent studies confirm Merck’s worst fears regarding short-term Vioxx use and related heart attack incidents. The greatest risk occurred in the first few weeks, not in the distant future, as Merck would have potential users believe. The company denies the accusations, basing their evidence solely on their own controlled clinical studies using patients’ medical records. Merck is already defending against some 11,500 lawsuits, which are expected to increase sharply due to these new findings.

Mercury Isn't the Only Toxic Item in Vaccines
Despite the negative publicity surrounding mercury and its use in vaccines, findings suggest aluminum hydroxide in vaccines could pose even greater health risks. Having been in circulation for 80 years, aluminum hydroxide will likely soon become the next toxic ingredient in vaccine cocktails. Initial discovery observations include skin allergies, 41 times the amount of memory problems by comparison to a placebo, as well as an astonishing 35% mortality rate among brain cells responsible for motor function.

Aluminum Exposure Increases Your Alzheimer's Risks
The autopsy of a British woman having passed from Alzheimer’s further solidifies the link between aluminum and this debilitating disease. She, along with 20,000 others, were exposed to a polluted drinking source for several weeks sixteen years prior to her rare early onset of Alzheimer’s. Several other residents have since reported suffering warning signs symptomatic of dementia.
(Dr. W. Straight Talk: Again, drink purified water and don’t assume that seeing no immediate ill effects means no long term effects. Also limit cooking in aluminum pans and don’t use aluminum-based deodorants. A high quality stainless steel pan is probably the best option, and there are excellent and safe natural deodorants without this metal.)
Nocturnal Sleep Eating: A Newly Described Ambien™ Side Effect
Ambien™, a sleep aid drug manufactured by Sanofi-Aventis, earned over $2 billion last year and accounted for 26 million prescriptions worldwide. Patients using this drug have reportedly eaten raw bacon, salt sandwiches, and buttered cigarettes, among other peculiar snacks, while still asleep. One woman quickly gained in excess of 100 pounds, and recently began taking additional medication simply to offset the severe side effects experienced from Ambien™. Symptoms of sleep eating include unexplained weight gain, loss of food, leftover food and product packaging at the bedside, as well as the taste of food upon waking. Only in America could a drug pass its clinical trials and actually be found responsible for creating a disease from the very symptoms it was created to prevent.

Chlorine in Your Water
Chlorine is used as a disinfecting agent in public water systems. Research has shown that chlorine and its by-products have been linked to damaging effects to heart, lung, kidney and brain as well as cancer. However, removing the by-products of chlorine from water is costly for water companies. Water companies don't reveal to the public the amount of chlorine by-products in water. Amounts vary in different locations and during the course of the year. However, if the average of all water tests conducted by the water company within a year is below Environmental Protection Agency standards, water companies can claim their water is safe.

The Tapioca Pet Food Myth
In the panic to find a competitive edge, pet food marketers attempt to paint some ingredients as toxic (those they don’t use), and others as healthy (those they so happen to use). The “NO” soy, wheat, corn, potato, rice, grain, beef, and chicken myths are examples. One producer claims “no grains” but then uses tapioca—which is, of course, a source of starch just like grains are. Research has shown that hydroxypropyl distarch phosphate (HDP) found in tapioca reduces the absorption of iron and zinc in diets containing adequate levels of these minerals in the starting mix. Both of these minerals are physiologically essential and participate in dozens of enzyme-related processes. Pets fed exclusively such diets, over time risk deficiencies in these minerals and with that increased susceptibility to a host of immune weaknesses and chronic diseases. This is not to say that occassional meals including tapioca are a problem. But then neither are occasional meals of all the no-no ingredients like corn, wheat, soy, rice, and so forth. The key to health is a mix of properly designed foods, natural fresh foods, and appropriate supplements, not a steady diet of any single processed food regardless of its claims.
Soy In Pet Foods
A popular whipping boy of the “NO” movement in pet foods is soy. Soy is most certainly not a proper substitute for protein in formulas. If it is not processed properly it can also disrupt digestion—but then, so too can almost any vegetable, tuber, or grain source. But that does not mean soy does not have nutraceutical benefits. We have used properly processed soy products in many supplements and human and animal foods for years with great benefit. Hundreds of scientific studies substantiate these benefits. For example, recent research has proven: soy isoflavones help ameliorate menopausal symptoms in women; a 56-year-old woman with platinum resistant ovarian cancer stabilized her condition and improved the serum tumor marker CA-125 by simply self-treating with a soy beverage; immune improvement and anticancer effects included a 700% increase in the immune system with anti-viral, anti-allergy, anti-inflammatory benefits and the stimulation of anti-angiogenesis and apoptosis. These latter two effects are important in retarding the growth of cancer and the death of cancer cells.
The Number One Problem In Pet Foods Is Ignored
If you are looking for a demon in processed foods (pet or human), look to fire. While processors goober labels up with “NO—this or that,” and claims about natural, organic, magic bullet ingredients and the like, the products are still tortured to death with processing. I have discussed the dangers of Maillard reaction products in cooked foods for over two decades. These are the nasty morsels that result in any product baked, extruded, heat dried, retorted, fried, or barbecued. Acrylamides are Maillard products that result from free amino acids (like asparagine) reacting with the carbonyl groups in reducing sugars such as glucose, fructose, and lactose. Virtually all foods contain both these amino acids and the sugars (either free or in polysaccharides such as starch, sucrose, syrups, etc.). These chemicals can then exert toxic effects on the immune system and even genetics. They will significantly increase fecal nitrogen output, which indicates a reduced utilization of protein. In the end, virtually every degenerative disease can either be incited or exacerbated. They are responsible for the pathogenesis of cardiovascular, hepatic, kidney and diabetic end-organ damage. This, along with like disease-generating effects of lipoxidation of fats and oils in heat processed foods, is the reason we have developed TNT™ (true non-thermal processed) human and animal foods that can be at least rotated into the diet.
Breed of Dog May Determine Amino Acid Biosynthesis
Taurine deficiency-induced dilated cardiomyopathy is more common in large breed dogs than small breed dogs. A recent study comparing Newfoundlands to Beagles, when fed the same taurine limiting diet, found that Beagles (smaller breeds) are more efficient at producing taurine than Newfoundlands (larger breeds). The reduced TBR (taurine biosynthetic rate) of Newfoundlands accounts for the higher occurrence of taurine deficiency-induced dilated cardiomyopathy.
