Rise of Antidepressants
Despite public awareness of confirmed side effects, including suicide risk, antidepressant sales continue to soar. The greatest spikes were noticed among children and adolescents, who reported seeing increases reaching 10% over the course of a single year. Moreover, preschooler use has skyrocketed, helping to catapult sales above $37 billion in 2003 alone. These monumental sales exceeded artery, heart, and blood pressure treatments by a staggering $9 million. Apparently, disclosure of FDA's decision to both ignore negative drug findings, as well as delay the addition of warning labels to antidepressants has not significantly discouraged the public or the physicians that recommend these ticking time bombs. Bottled Water Doubles Risk of Infection
Sales of bottled water in this country have nearly tripled in the past ten years, largely as a result of a public perception of purity, driven by advertisements and packaging labels featuring pristine glaciers and crystal-clear mountain springs. But, what if bottled water actually increased your susceptibility of catching an infectious disease?
What began as a pioneer study to determine the possible habits causing the spread of infectious disease has shown alarming concern for bottled water users. The studies, performed weekly, monthly, and quarterly on 238 inner-city New York homes, reported bottled water as being linked to doubling a consumer's risk of catching an infectious disease. While follow-up studies are in place to further substantiate or debunk these results, evidence surrounding the overall purity of 600 other tested brands of bottled water on the market is casting a tall shadow on future water sales. (Dr. W. Straight Talk: It seems we are given to trust anything that is in a package. Keep in mind, tomorrow, if you wanted to, you could produce your own brand of bottled water. All you need is water, a label, bottle and marketing. Since you have a faucet and can easily find packaging, you can be off and running in no time. You will only be stopped IF a problem results. Bottled water is a crazy waste, aside from the risk. All the plastic, packaging, shipping...it's nuts. Just get a good filter such as we offer or equivalent and create your own safe water and use the same bottle [glass is best] over and over.)

Antidepressants Impair Love and Sex Drive
Researchers have discovered that individuals taking antidepressant medications may experience significant reduction in an ability to experience love and romantic attachment. The chemicals in the drugs are thought to disrupt the serotonin levels in the brain and interfere with neurological circuits associated with lust, attraction and sex drive. Changes in people on antidepressants are initially subtle but escalate to a sudden loss of feelings towards significant others, resulting in strained relationships and loss of loved ones. Repeated Weight Loss and Gain May be Harmful to Immune System
Constant losing and regaining of weight, called “yo-yo” dieting, has been found to be detrimental to immune health. A recent study found that women who constantly dieted had lower natural-killer-cell (NK) function than those women who remained at a constant weight over a 20 year period. Decreased NK function has been linked to cancer and increased vulnerability to colds and other viruses. Researchers also found that the number of times a woman dieted was proportionate to the decline in immune function. Isolated episodes of dieting were not found to affect the immune function. Vitamin K, Crohn's Disease and Osteoporosis
Vitamin K status and rate of bone resorption were measured in 44 patients having Crohn's disease in remission. Serum concentrations were used to determine vitamin K status and urinary excretions were used to determine rate of bone resorption. Vitamin K status was significantly lower in patients than in controls. Vitamin K status has been found to be lower in people with osteoporosis than in age matched healthy controls. Duggan P, et al. Vitamin E for Hayfever
In a double-blind study, 112 people with seasonal allergies were randomly given 800IU/day of vitamin E or placebo, in addition to their regular allergy treatments, during pollen season. Results indicate that vitamin E is a useful adjunct to conventional allergy therapy.

Benefits of Fish Oil for Asthmatics
A new study shows omega-3 fatty acid supplements can protect against exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) in asthma sufferers. EIB is a temporary narrowing of the airways that can be triggered by vigorous exercise and commonly seen in asthmatics. Sixteen asthmatics' (with EIB) normal diet was supplemented for three weeks by either a placebo capsule (olive oil) or a fish oil capsule. The fish oil diet improved overall pulmonary (lung) function. One of the mechanisms for this is the role of DHA and EPA (omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil) in the decreased levels (as seen in the supplemented fish oil group) of the inflammatory markers and a partial replacement of arachidonic acid (AA), an omega-6 fatty acid in inflammatory cell membranes. Fish oil supplementation thus represents a beneficial non-pharmacological intervention in asthmatic patients. Chest. Vol. 129, No. 1, pp. 39-49.
(Dr. W. Straight Talk: Another of a growing list of benefits of increasing omega-3 fatty acids in the diet. But don't think of these benefits as if they were like those induced by a drug. When a nutrient exerts such a beneficial effect it is usually due to reversing a chronic dietary deficiency. The modern diet is not only omega-3 deficient, what omega-3 fatty acids are there are usually converted to toxins from food processing and storage. Light, heat and air convert these fragile molecules to free radical toxins. Eat lots of fresh and natural foods. Cook minimally and take your omega-3 supplements. By doing so, you will help prevent the many diseases that supplements such as omega-3's are being shown to help reverse.)

Pycnogenol Reduces Osteoarthritis Pain
Pycnogenol, an extract from the bark of the French maritime pine, has been linked to preventing deep vein thrombosis, platelet aggregation, and anti-inflammatory effects. A recent study showed that 30 minutes after taking the above supplement, the mean inhibition of enzymes responsible for inflammation and pain, COX-1 and COX-2 was 22.5 and 15 per cent. The mechanism by which Pycnogenol inhibits the enzymes is unclear, but it's sure that the complex mixture of various components of the bark including various antioxidant polyphenols provides rapid bioavailability of these compounds after oral intake of the extract. (Dr. W. Straight Talk: No need to reach for Rx drugs that mask symptoms and bring with them myriad side effects every time there is a health problem. The science substantiating the benefits of natural compounds has advanced exponentially in the past twenty years and there is now no ill that cannot be treated to some extent by natural medicine. Always try these more safe remedies before taking a gamble with Rx. Or, take them in combination with Rx [provided there is no contraindication in doing so] so that perhaps less Rx is necessary.)

Vitamin D Inhibits Prostate Cancer Growth
Over half a million new cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed every year worldwide, and the cancer is the direct cause of over 200,000 deaths. This study showed that vitamin D inhibited the function of protease enzymes that are involved in tumor invasion, while simultaneously increasing the activity of their counterparts – the inhibitors of those enzymes. “The best way to get vitamin D is to drink milk, get modest exposure to the sun, and take a vitamin pill to enrich vitamin D, which might prevent cancer,” concluded the study. (Dr. W. Straight Talk: Fortified milk doesn't begin to do the job. Lots of sun [short of getting burned], fresh natural foods and good mega D supplements during the fall and winter is the best way to prevent all the maladies caused by vitamin D deficiency.)

The Cost of Bad Research
A trial set out to compare women eating a normal diet vs. women eating a diet low in fat and high in fruit, vegetables and whole grains. Published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) Dietary Modification Trial involved 48,835 post-menopausal women, eight years of follow-up and cost a staggering $415 million dollars of taxpayers' money. The end results created headlines that declared a low-fat, fruit-‘n'-veg-rich diet does not change your risk of colorectal or breast cancer of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The diet aimed to cut down fat intake for the intervention group to less than 20 percent, eat five servings of fruit and vegetables, and six portions of grains per day. The studies claim they succeeded in reducing fat intake by 8.2 g, but by year six the average fat intake was still 29 percent. The normal diet group was eating 35 percent fat. The intake of vegetables and fruit did go up as well, but only by about one serving per day.
The design of the study was flawed from the start, which is undoubtedly why there was opposition when the study was first proposed. One failing of the study was its being restricted to only post-menopausal women. Leading nutritional and medical researchers said it wasn't worth doing, while the National Institute of Health initially rejected calls for funding (yet approved by Congress). The researchers themselves admit that very few of the women in the intervention group actually met the targets. This means that millions of dollars were spent on an intervention study that didn't really intervene! The researchers claim that weight loss was never a target of the study. With evidence linking obesity to diabetes, CVD and breast cancer, and with over 70 percent of volunteers with a ‘weight issue' surely weight loss should have been a crucial target. And what about regular exercise? No mention. Reducing the size of portions? Not a target. In fact no limitation on salt intake or type of fat was even considered in the design. Experts have rightly spoken out against the studies, encouraging the public to stick with five portions of fruit and vegetables a day and stressing that people take care about fat intake. http://www.foodproductiondaily.com/news
