TRYPTOPHAN - BEYOND THE TURKEY

Serotonin, a relaxation and sleep neurochemical, is indirectly linked to carbohydrate consumption. Serotonin is synthesized from the amino acid tryptophan - known for being abundant in that holiday turkey. So if more tryptophan can move into the brain from blood vessels, more serotonin will be produced and relaxation or sleep will be triggered.

By an interesting mechanism, the ingestion of carbohydrates promotes this. When carbohydrates are eaten, the body releases insulin that not only moves carbohydrates into cells for fuel, but also moves all amino acids (and to a much lesser extent, tryptophan) into muscle and other tissues. This leaves a relative abundance of tryptophan in the blood after a high-carbohydrate meal. This excess then "spills" into brain tissue, resulting in serotonin production, relaxation and sleepiness.

Refined, processed carbohydrates (sugar, white flour, etc.), in particular, stimulate peaks in blood sugar, followed by a rapid release of insulin and resultant serotonin production in the brain. If more natural whole foods are consumed in place of processed carbohydrates, radical swings in energy are replaced with a more tempered and healthy rest-wake pattern. Once again, we see that returning to our natural genetic context can restore healthy natural balance - even during the holidays.
