The Mystery Inside Your Pet
Since health is in large part fueled by food, learning about pet nutrition is of critical importance. But I am not going to bore you with the tired old nutritional pabulum you probably learned in grade school about how calcium builds bones, protein builds muscle, and carbohydrates give energy... nor are you going to be told about a specific food formula, demon or savior ingredients, and special percentages.
You're not going to be told such things because they are really not important, and because nobody talking about such things, when it comes right down to it regardless of their credentials, has any idea what they are talking about.
Although modern science would give us the impression that they know what is deep down inside cellular machinery, and that the body is just a mechanism made of parts that can be probed, repaired, and replaced, that is simply not true.
Now then, if scientists were routinely building living creatures in a laboratory, that would be one thing. We could expect that they knew as much about the life that they built as engineers do about every intricate detail of automobiles and computers. But, since humans have never been able to create life in the laboratory, we should not trust their pronouncements about what living creatures are or what they need.
No one really even knows what life is. Think about it. When a body or a cell dies, all the material parts are still there. If a living thing is just the summation of those parts, why isn't it still alive?
There are millions of events going on second by second inside just one of your dog's or cat's 100 trillion body cells. We can speculate about some of these things, but we do not understand them or how and why the millions of biochemicals come together as they do at lightning speed to make it all possible.
The point of this little philosophical diversion is to point out that although we understand some about the workings of living creatures, far more remains unknown than known. So don't expect to be able to go to any doctor or scientist and be able to get precise answers about health and the fuel (nutrients) required for it.
This understanding, this admission of ignorance and humility, is the beginning of nutritional and health wisdom.
Proof of the powerful and safe effectiveness of natural therapies
Zinc Lozenges and the Common Cold
Dr. George Eby, in 1984, showed that taking zinc lozenges can reduce the duration of the common cold by a week, essentially a cure for it. Subsequent studies only found about a 50% success rate with zinc lozenges, but it has been determined that the type and dose of the zinc is what makes the difference. A dosage of at least 75 mg of zinc every day is needed for efficiency. The most effective forms are zinc acetate and zinc gluconate. Ionic (positively charged) zinc is a strong antiviral agent and helps increase production of white blood cells, and it acts as an antihistamine. Zinc lozenges should be taken at the first sign of a cold and should slowly dissolve in the mouth over a 20 to 30 minute period every two hours. Med Hypotheses, Open Respiratory Medicine Journal
Whole Sunshine Provides Many Health Benefits
Whole sunshine, which includes ultraviolet, visible spectrum, and infrared wavelengths, provides significant health benefits. Many studies have shown that patients with atherosclerosis showed a reduction of serum cholesterol by as much as 13% with just two hours of sunlight exposure. Rabbits exposed to sunlight also had cleaner arteries than those exposed to standard room lighting.
Other noted health benefits to whole sunshine include:
Solar radiation on male genitals increased testosterone secretion
Glycogen storage in the muscle and liver increases after sunbathing
Sunbathing lowers cholesterol and triglyceride levels and normalizes electrocardiograms
Early stage hypertension improves with sunbathing and UV light exposure

Weight Loss with Green Tea
A compound in green tea, called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), increases fat oxidation by as much as 33%, as well as inhibiting fat cell development, and could increase fat excretion. This leads researchers to conclude green tea could be a helpful weight loss aid. European Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Weight Loss, Protein, and PCOS
A recent study of women, average age of 28 years, who had polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), were given either a high protein diet (40% of energy from protein) or a standard protein diet (15% of energy from protein). Those on the high protein diet lost significantly more weight, which improved glucose metabolism. Improved glucose metabolism is found to restore ovulation in women with PCOS. American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. (See our Protein Key)

I long ago came to realize that the most worthy role of any doctor is to teach people how not to need them. This led me away from practice where treating symptoms is the primary tool and a misinformed public has come to expect magic bullet cures. But no disease is ever caused by the lack of a drug, and no treatment—save that for trauma or defect—ever improves an organism. Medical intervention is, in fact, now the number one cause of death and suffering in our modern world.
Illness, in large part, comes from wrong thinking. Health requires an open-minded, fact-based philosophy of life and an ambition to make yourself the best you can be. Thoughtlessly following convention and laziness are irreconcilable with health.
Wellness requires a deep respect for the great unknowns of life and the power of natural healing forces. Pretending that we can command nature and that the body is a mere machine that can be manipulated with impunity by "experts" is an illusion of both professionals and the public.
So it is my hope that this newsletter will help you to take control of your own health destiny, trust the healing powers within and in nature, and understand that ultimately wellbeing is about what you do to yourself, not what someone else can do to you.
