No Value in Food Allergy Testing
Dr. John Boyles, Jr. states that the common Combs typing allergy testing diagnostics are worthless. He says that yes, Type 1, or anaphylactic food reactions are true food allergies, but the other groups, Type II through Type IV, have no evidence to back them up. He indicates that the only two ways to test for food sensitivity include either a feeding test or a neutralization test. He is quoted as saying: "There are no double-blind studies that show any type of in vitro food testing is efficacious." Townsend Letter.
Soy Protein Can Reduce Risk of Cardiovascular Disease
Several recent clinical and non-clinical studies have shown that supplementation with soy proteins can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Soy proteins, although the mechanism is not yet completely understood, have shown to lower cholesterol levels and inhibit cholesterol oxidation, which also helps reduce blood pressure. Your Brain on a Cell Phone
By the end of 2007, approximately half the world population used cell phones. Especially growing in usage are the developing countries like Africa, as well as India and Asian countries. Not coincidentally, there is currently a brain cancer epidemic. Statistics extrapolate out to a million brain cancer cases in the U.S. alone by 2015. Cell phones, very simply put, expose our brains to dangerous radiation, which is potentially cancer-inducing. Many studies have shown a connection for at least a decade now, but of course other studies and the cell phone companies vigorously argue otherwise.
To err on the side of caution: use your phone only where there is good reception so your phone doesn't have to ramp up power to be used; don't wear or keep the phone near your body when it's on; use an old-fashioned land line when possible; don't let children or teenagers use the phones except in emergency or rarely; and turn to headset technology so you can keep the phone far from your head and body. In addition, remember how much wireless technology is coursing around us all, every day. Wireless internet and portable cordless land phones in all our homes… all the radiation in the community at large… minimizing use whenever possible only makes sense. Mediterranean Diet and Carotid Atherosclerosis
According to a study published in Circulation (Journal of the American Heart Association), following a Mediterranean diet helps reverse carotid atherosclerosis in obese people. This type of diet is low in carbohydrates and low in fat. Journal of the American Heart Association.
American Diet Lacks Phytonutrients
Phytonutrients (natural plant based compounds), which have been found to be important contributors to heart health, are greatly lacking in the typical American diet. I long ago came to realize that the most worthy role of any doctor is to teach people how not to need them. This led me away from practice where treating symptoms is the primary tool and a misinformed public has come to expect magic bullet cures. But no disease is ever caused by the lack of a drug, and no treatment—save that for trauma or defect—ever improves an organism. Medical intervention is, in fact, now the number one cause of death and suffering in our modern world.
Illness, in large part, comes from wrong thinking. Health requires an open-minded, fact-based philosophy of life and an ambition to make yourself the best you can be. Thoughtlessly following convention and laziness are irreconcilable with health.
Wellness requires a deep respect for the great unknowns of life and the power of natural healing forces. Pretending that we can command nature and that the body is a mere machine that can be manipulated with impunity by "experts" is an illusion of both professionals and the public.
So it is my hope that this newsletter will help you to take control of your own health destiny, trust the healing powers within and in nature, and understand that ultimately wellbeing is about what you do to yourself, not what someone else can do to you.
