The Danger Lurking in Middle Grocery Store Aisle
The simplicity of knowing what you are getting when you shop the meat and produce aisles at the grocery store is lost once you move into the center aisles. That's the domain of the processed food industry where food is disguised.
How can consumers really know what's in the syrups, gravies, flakes, powders, and creams? I mean really. A label is just words. In the middle aisles, words are traded for real, identifiable foods.
Food magicians with their bevy of marketing and label cosmeticians are skilled at convincing consumers that what lies within is "value-added" and far better than what can be found at the meat and produce counters, or harvested out of the backyard garden. Words and pictures are also a lot cheaper than real nutritional merit. Deception is not so easy with an apple, a bundle of lettuce, or a lamb chop, which are clearly what they are.
True, all foods are regulated, but no government official watches over what goes into every package, nor are they qualified to determine true health merit. We hope there is honesty and health skill in the food industry, but the lure of $ can skew ethical judgment. This is not to mention the nutritionally vitiating effects of processing itself.
With regard to pet foods, in particular, unlike almost everything in grocery stores that is just intended as components, condiments, or recreation (a lot of that) for human menus, pet foods are pushed as "100% complete" meals. Nobody knows what "100% complete" is with certainty. So the claim is deceptive and dangerous for those who believe it and feed the same food meal after meal. (The claim is actually mandated by regulators--a travesty of regulatory authority--and embraced heartily by producers who want consumers to feed their food relentlessly.)
This is not to say that processed foods cannot have merit, even a lot of merit. But discerning that requires some study and thought not only about the products, but the people who are producing them. Even then, packaged foods should never totally replace real fresh foods found at the perimeter of the grocery store.
Proof of the powerful and safe effectiveness of natural therapies
Stress Causes Urinary Problems in Cats - The current theory among researchers is that stress, and not food, plays a main causative role in the development of feline urinary cystitis/FUS/FLUTD. It was previously believed that dry cat food, and possibly the high ash/mineral content of dry cat food, and a resulting alkaline pH, was a causative factor, however, it is estimated that 99% of cats are fed dry food, and only a small percentage of the total population of cats are affected by the condition. Urinary pH in most cats with cystitis is already acidic as well. It is now thought that a neuroendocrine disorder, caused by stress, is a major contributing factor to the condition. Treatment of cystitis depends upon the severity (blockages indicate emergency medical intervention), but most signs resolve on their own within a week regardless of treatment. Relieving stress, by changing the environment, may help with treatment and prevention of cystitis. Increased human interaction, toys, changing litter box conditions and even playing music may help to relieve stress in cats. American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine Forum
Nutritional Therapy for Schizophrenia - Vitamin B3 (niacin) therapy has been shown in extensive studies to effectively reduce schizophrenia symptoms. A clinical trial showed significant improvement in patients administered 3 grams of vitamin B3 per day, and 88% of those patients remained well 1 year after the study, as compared to 33% of the placebo group. Using the vitamin B3 treatment also allows for easier withdrawal from antipsychotic drugs.

Soy and Breast Cancer Risk - A study in 2007 found that post- and pre-menopausal women with higher levels of genistein, have a 1/3 lowered risk for developing breast cancer. Genistein is a major isoflavone found in soy. Isoflavones are considered phytoestrogens, or weak plant estrogens. J Clin Oncol
Fosamax and Osteonecrosis - Women taking Fosamax, a biophosphonate drug, for osteoporosis may be at a high risk for osteonecrosis. Osteonecrosis is a painful decaying of the jaw bone, tooth loss, and exposed bone. Biophosphantes kill osteoclasts, which are bone cells responsible for remodeling. Immediate relief is also not seen when patients stop taking the drug, as the half-life, and bone building effects of the drug, is 6-12 years. This is yet another example of why consumers must be very wary of any allopathic drug. They are all inherently dangerous. National Institutes of Health, and The American Association of Endodontists

I long ago came to realize that the most worthy role of any doctor is to teach people how not to need them. This led me away from practice where treating symptoms is the primary tool and a misinformed public has come to expect magic bullet cures. But no disease is ever caused by the lack of a drug, and no treatment—save that for trauma or defect—ever improves an organism. Medical intervention is, in fact, now the number one cause of death and suffering in our modern world.
Illness, in large part, comes from wrong thinking. Health requires an open-minded, fact-based philosophy of life and an ambition to make yourself the best you can be. Thoughtlessly following convention and laziness are irreconcilable with health.
Wellness requires a deep respect for the great unknowns of life and the power of natural healing forces. Pretending that we can command nature and that the body is a mere machine that can be manipulated with impunity by "experts" is an illusion of both professionals and the public.
So it is my hope that this newsletter will help you to take control of your own health destiny, trust the healing powers within and in nature, and understand that ultimately wellbeing is about what you do to yourself, not what someone else can do to you.
