Engineered Crops Don't Equal Higher Yields
A review by the UCS (Union of Concerned Scientists) of dozens of studies concluded that genetically engineered crops do not lead to significant yield increases. They further found that traditional breeding and other agricultural practices have been responsible for the increased yields of corn and soybeans in the last 15 years. The UCS, based upon this review, recommends that research be more geared toward traditional breeding and modern ecological farming methods, with less emphasis on genetically engineering technology. Failure to Yield.
Feed Efficiency Increased in Pigs Fed High Fat Diet
Researchers at Iowa State University studied the effect of a high fat diet to nursery pigs instead of using antibiotics. The pigs fed the high fat diet grew well and stayed healthy, and actually gained weight faster than the pigs on antibiotics. Both groups were fed the same volume of food. This study shows that modifying the diet, rather than using antibiotics, may be a key in raising healthy animals. Iowa State University Animal Industry Report, 2008.
SunPhobia – Two Reasons Not To Worry About the Sun
Sunblock companies and dermatologists have warned people about the dangers of sunlight exposure, and the risk of skin cancer. But, studies have shown that the risk of skin cancer due to sun exposure is exaggerated.
First, the incidence of skin cancer and the usage of sunblock have risen concurrently since 1920. Therefore, the use of sunblock has not reduced the occurrence of skin cancer. One study found that the risk of skin cancer increased with the lack of antioxidant vitamins (C, D and E) in the diet and was not related to exposure to UV light (Black, 1974).
Second, most skin cancers are completely curable! Topical solasodine glycoside treatments can cure squamous and basal cell carcinomas, usually within 14 weeks. New England Journal of Medicine.

The Wysong Healthletter is now well into its third decade of continuous publication. It is offered free to help you make a better you and a better world.
I long ago came to realize that the most worthy role of any doctor is to teach people how not to need them. This led me away from practice where treating symptoms is the primary tool and a misinformed public has come to expect magic bullet cures. But no disease is ever caused by the lack of a drug, and no treatment—save that for trauma or defect—ever improves an organism. Medical intervention is, in fact, now the number one cause of death and suffering in our modern world.
Illness, in large part, comes from wrong thinking. Health requires an open-minded, fact-based philosophy of life and an ambition to make yourself the best you can be. Thoughtlessly following convention and laziness are irreconcilable with health.
Wellness requires a deep respect for the great unknowns of life and the power of natural healing forces. Pretending that we can command nature and that the body is a mere machine that can be manipulated with impunity by "experts" is an illusion of both professionals and the public.
So it is my hope that this newsletter will help you to take control of your own health destiny, trust the healing powers within and in nature, and understand that ultimately wellbeing is about what you do to yourself, not what someone else can do to you.
