The Wysong Healthletter is now well into its third decade of continuous publication. It is offered free to help you make a better you and a better world.
I long ago came to realize that the most worthy role of any doctor is to teach people how not to need them. This led me away from practice where treating symptoms is the primary tool and a misinformed public has come to expect magic bullet cures. But no disease is ever caused by the lack of a drug, and no treatment—save that for trauma or defect—ever improves an organism. Medical intervention is, in fact, now the number one cause of death and suffering in our modern world.
Illness, in large part, comes from wrong thinking. Health requires an open-minded, fact-based philosophy of life and an ambition to make yourself the best you can be. Thoughtlessly following convention and laziness are irreconcilable with health.
Wellness requires a deep respect for the great unknowns of life and the power of natural healing forces. Pretending that we can command nature and that the body is a mere machine that can be manipulated with impunity by "experts" is an illusion of both professionals and the public.
So it is my hope that this newsletter will help you to take control of your own health destiny, trust the healing powers within and in nature, and understand that ultimately wellbeing is about what you do to yourself, not what someone else can do to you.

The purpose of the Institute is to help true victims, particularly children and animals, and make sure the dollars used go directly and efficiently to the point of need.
Where can we help?
If you know of a worthy cause that is managed by volunteers (no fat salaries to siphon off donations), please send details for us to consider. We have limited resources but if we like the cause and you can prove the money is used efficiently, we will certainly give consideration.
How you can help?
Any contribution to the Institute is tax deductible and is used virtually in its entirety for the philanthropic end. WysongInstitute.org
Unfortunately, the egg has been a no-no for many low fat diets and for those mistakenly concerned with cholesterol levels. In reality, eggs are one of nature's most "complete" foods, containing an incredible array of nutrients.
Eggs are an excellent source of protein. They are also a very good source of lutein and zeaxanthin, and carotenoids which are believed to help protect the eyes from damage from ultraviolet light. Having a high dietary intake of lutein and zeaxanthin helps reduce the risk of cataracts by 20% and age related macular degeneration by up to 40%.
Eggs are an important source of choline, an essential element, and impact and improve brain development and lifelong memory capabilities. Good dietary choline for pregnant women is vital for babies to develop good memory capacity as adults.
With the negative public opinion of eggs, their usage has diminished. Eggs can make a very positive impact on most Americans' diets. Journal of the American College of Nutrition.
Mountain Biking Poses Risks for Men
Men who mountain bike run a high risk of injuries to the scrotum, which could affect their fertility. Studies show as many as 96% of biking men had scrotal abnormalities from mountain biking. These abnormalities included calcium deposits, spermatoceles (sperm-containing cysts), and twisted veins. These abnormalities were seen in only 16% of men who went biking, but not off road biking. Additionally, half of the men reported that they had felt scrotal tenderness.
Biking has been linked to impotence in men, regardless of the terrain that was ridden. Mountain biking, however, often results in more severe effects. It is felt that off-road biking damages the epididymis, which are the tightly coiled tubes against the back of each testis where sperm are stored and mature. The Lancet.
Dr. W.: If you like to bike--and it is great non-impact exercise--consider a recumbent that puts your body (and back in particular) in a more ergonomically friendly position, takes pressure off the wrists and arms, and does not put pressure on the scrotum and perineum. I ride one to work every day and have done so for the past 25 years. Gets me outside, great exercise, and no damage.
As many as one out of every three patients who undergo catheterization don't need it. Often, the devices are left in too long. In part, this is due to the fact that it makes the jobs of hospital staff easier.
Potential issues with catheterization are:
Prolonged use can lead to painful urinary tract infections and possibly longer hospital stays.
Inappropriate use is an important safety issue for patients. If they do not need catheterization, it should be removed as soon as possible.
25% of all hospital patients will have a catheter at some point in their stays.
28% of the time, doctors either never knew the patient had one or forgot about it.
Catheters are useful for bed-ridden or incontinent patients, in post-operative recovery, for bladder obstructions, or when urine levels need observation. However, for every day a catheter is left in a patient has a 5% chance of developing a urinary tract infection, which can potentially spread into the bloodstream.
New guidelines are being proposed to have a mandatory removal of catheters after 48 hours. Patients and their families can proactively look out for themselves by simply asking doctors if the catheter is absolutely necessary. American Journal of Medicine.
Dr. W.: However, asking doctors what is or is not necessary provides no certainty. The burden is on you to get informed. Take no expert's word for anything when it comes to your body and your health, or your family's. With the Internet there is no excuse for ignorance or passive reliance on so-called experts. Think critically, get informed, be open-minded, and only with absolute certainty permit medical or surgical intervention.
